The show completely jumped the shell after season 1

I mean getting transported to other planets, Shredder being an alien, earth invasion, the superheroes and don't get me started on season 5 and their quest to defeat the Tengu Shredder. The 2003 show started out very grounded with a couple of scifi elements but went overboard once they entered the TGRI building.

Yes, it certainly seemed that way.

Season 1 is the truest to the Mirage comics. Had the rest of the series been like that we would have had less gimmicks and pretenses but perhaps less twists and surprises as well.

Regardless, I like seasons 1 to 3 the most. While fun, I think some of the gimmicks (like Shredder being an Utrom and o no this is the real Shredder and the Insane in the Membrane episode and the infamous unfinished Garbage Man ep) went for shock value too much. Later some of the one-offs both comic based (the Halloween ep and Ratking) or original (the Civil War zombies and the H.P Lovecraft monster) that didn't rely on changing and twisting comic lore too much nor go overboard with gross-out or goofiness were probably my favorites. Even early on the Notes From the Underground are some of my favorite episodes.

I agree. I'm probably gonna stick with the 1st season of this show.

Curious, are you watching the show now, or have you already seen all the seasons?

When I watched this show on air, I believe that I went beyond the 1st season, but I'm not too sure. Considering how Fast Foward is being recieved, I should probably stick with the 1st season.

Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers are pretty much different shows from seasons 1 to 5. Even the Ninja Tribunal (aka The Lost Season) could be b/c of the plot. 1 through 3 have the same level of quality, I thought 4 slipped a bit in, but had some great episodes. I'd recommend watching Turtles in Space and Secret Origins atleast b/c they are great adaptations of the Search for Splinter (TMNT #4 to 7 and Fugitoid #1) from the classic comics. Return to New York and City at War as well.

I only caught the odd episode, but had a lot of trouble following. I thought them going to the future was a different show. I didn't get Shredder being some kind of Krang alien. Were the characters combined into one?

The main complaint I have against this series.

Shell, look at season 3! I think they go 4 or 5 straight episodes where their jumping around to different planets, dimensions, time periods (and I'm not even referring to that little story arc where they get separated).

Giant talking ninja turtles walking around in New York is a unique idea, but giant talking ninja turtles interacting with other-wordy species in various fantasy/sci fi locations on a rampantly consistent basis? Some charm is lost.

Season 1 and 4 I love. Season 1 being the most grounded, and season 4 performing a nice balancing act. Such as the first 3 episodes, where we get to spend some time at Casey Jones' farm house. With that first episode of season 4 having nothing to do with any strange being. Just some crooked human relatives and the 'Turtles applying stealth to take each one down.

Some day, would love to see a series where both Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman is involved.

Liked how grounded the 4th season often was. Good blend of grounded stories mixed with out-there plots.

Uniqueness begins loosing it's charm once it becomes the norm.
