Phil Hartman as Mr. Chairman?

For some reason, whenever I see Steve Martin's performace for this film, I think that it may have been originally written for Phil Hartman to play. He had already established himself in the toon industry by voicing several characters in The Simpsons, but after his tragic death the producers had to settle for the zany antics of Steve Martin.
Or am I just fooling myself?

I can totally see that. I imagine Phil would have been great in this movie. His death was such a tragic loss!

Not that I'd agree Steve Martin is a second-tier replacement here. I thought he totally worked in this; he had me completyely hooked by the character - I couldn't recognise him when I first saw the movie. He aced it!

I am - SUPERFLUOUS!!!

Well, it could be possible, depending on how long before the film was released the script was written. The film was released in 2003 and Phil died in 1998.

So? Shrek was originally written for Chris Farley.

That would have been awesome!

I'm sure Joe Dante would have loved to cast Phil Hartman in that role, considering that Dante had already worked with him on Small Soldiers (which was even dedicated to his memory).
