The Walmart Scene

Me and my brother died laughing after that. It was so random.

This kind of thing is very confusing in other countries, it makes no sence in the UK for example. Hollywood don't give a *beep* about the rest of the world.

"Nice of WAL-MART to provide these WAL-MART beverages in return for us saying WAL-MART so many times."

Yeah, practically everyone's heard of Wal-Mart. Even if you haven't, you can work out what that scene means :)
I thought it was funny. This movie was a lot better than I expected it to be (but then I had very low expectations). The jokes were kind of clever.

reply

Yes, actually... there is a a chain of super markets in the UK that is a part of the Wal-mart family. People in the UK will probably know what supermarket I'm talking about, but if not, its ASDA.

It's also a movie made in America. I'm sure if a major store that isn't in America was mentioned in a movie from another country, then Americans wouldn't get it.

reply

i dont think anyone would not get that
unless they live in a hole
i dont live in america.

Please tell me this is like some reality show called "My Skank." -- Dick Casablancas!

^ this
and i live on the other side of the globe.

*off-topic

watching space jam after seeing this was a total let down, combining pro basketball with looney tunes was an absolute sh*t idea!!!!

reply

Well, you know, while i might well tend to sympathise with your point in most cases - this is a US made film about quintessentially-USAian characters and situations; do you complain about similarly-obscure-to-furriners in the *original* Loony Tubes shorts, which were much more US-specific?

When i was nine years old (only shortly after the dinosaurs became extinct) and i discovered Arthur Ransome's "Swallows & Amazons" books and read all of them as quickly as i could find them, i had difficulty with the LSD money in them, and the term "round as a football" threw me at first ... but i didn't complain - anything i didn't know that i needed to know to understand what was going on, i found out in short order.

Would the same gag, but based on a McDonalds, have bothered ou so much?

reply

Ohh... pull the stick out of your ass... It is an AMERICAN MOVIE with a AMERICAN COMPANY using product placement.

Sorry, two's company, and three's an adult movie.

reply

I was surprised they got through the Wal-Mart so easily without being harrassed by rednecks.

reply

I thought it was a cheap gag that wasn't any good.

reply

i'm in the us and i don't understand the seane. i mean during that sene it has drake saying something to the girl about "do you have anthing to do wtih this?" or something

reply

Product placement is a huge business in the movie industry. Companies literally can pay several hundred thousand dollars to have their logos, products, etc. prominently displayed in movies. Hence Kate's reponse to DJ's question

reply

I thought the whole joke was about there being a Wal-Mart in "every corner".

What we think, we become.

reply

Just like insular, incestuous, self-absorbed Hollywood to use such an obscure reference! Next they'll say "Coca-Cola" or "McDonalds." I don't even know what these words mean!

If you don't give the characters a convenience, where will they go to wee-wee?

reply

Tthe joke is to make you think the wal mart is a mirage but its real also, wal mart (i live in the UK) is the biggest chain of supermarkets in the US, just as its sister, ASDA is in the UK.

reply

after having been fired from Wal-mart for failure to keep the bottle redemption room clean for an hour after my scheduled shift was over, I double flipped off the screen when that scene came on.

How you can make the world a better place:
Don't shop at Wal-Mart.

I liked how they broke the "4th wall" and revealed that Kate had arranged for it to be in the movie. And Brendan Fraser's look at the camera.
