Steve backstabs the gang to get more money but used roughly the same amount of people in the double cross as the original heist no?

With the original crew, they were splitting the gold evenly. Assumably Steve simply had hired hands in the second heist / betrayal. For all we know, Steve's crew didn't even know it was gold they were moving. They probably were working each for a set amount, not an equal share. Steve would've walked away with at least 26 out of the 27 million.
