Why did a party foil the team's first attempt ??

I mean really?!? Option 1 was to drive into Steve's house, throw the gold into the Minis and drive away. The damage would be a few witnesses at the party. Hmmm. No. Let's do option 2, where we stop every traffic light in the city, blow a huge hole in the ground which makes an armored car drop in, hope the cops and Steve don't show up while we're trying to pick the safe, drive out of the tunnel with motorcycles and a helicopter chasing us (and hope the cops don't notice too), and then...oh yes...there's STILL about a thousand witnesses to the whole thing. Good call. We'll I guess you could argue...it worked.

Because they were planning to blow the front gate at Steve's house, which would have been in full view of the party-goers across the street. The next plan was to have Steve ask Charlize out on a second date, so they could try their plan another night. But he recognizes her as Bridger' s daughter, so that plan is blown and they are forced to steal it in the more elaborate on the street heist.

It was explained clearly in the movie.

The plan was to fire a chemical grenade into the guard booth to knock out the guards.

Then they were going to blow the front gate with explosives. We see Left Ear experimenting with the explosives and blowing up a gate replica in the warehouse as they're prepping.

Then they were going to drive the cars into the house to crack the safe, load up the cars, and split back out of the house and off the property.

However, as someone else mentioned, they didn't plan on a huge party going on next door with valets out front and a crowd of people who would obviously notice the explosion next door.

That plan involved Steve believing that Stella was going to meet him at the restaurant, while they stood him up and stole the gold from his home. However, since that plan was botched by the people out front for the party next door, she had to go ahead and meet him at the restaurant.

We hear Steve say that he had other guards that Charlie didn't know about, but I presume that Stella would have been looking for them when she was brought through the house to fix the cable. And we know Steve could have been lying because he WAS lying about the amount of gold remaining. I just figured he was trying to scare Charlie into not wanting to break in before he could get out of town.
