The weight of the safe plus three tons of gold inside would have went through that boat like it was made of paper. How would the guys guarding the safe not know that when they saw the boat speeding away?

They were caught up in the moment. If you're safe drops underneath you where you know there's a waterway, and then see a boat speed away, it would be easy to assume the same thing when you're under duress.

shareYou're absolutely right, but as someone else said, they were caught in the moment of seeing the safe speeding away. It took me about 5 seconds to figure out, "Hey, wait a second, that safe would've fallen right through the boat, too." And I wasn't just next to a giant explosion, and I wasn't going to get killed by other mobsters for letting the safe get away on a speeding boat.
