How is this still not the greatest cult film of all time?!?
(Not bothering with spoiler alert... though I guess I typed more than necessary for a spoiler alert, so it kinda already is)
Every time I explain this movie to someone new, I simply tell them this:
"You know how in Bugs Bunny cartoons and the odometer in a car is flicking at the maximum and then suddenly dies. Yeah, this movie is like that. At first you hate it, you want to pluck your eyeballs out of your sockets. But at some point in the movie [for me, it was the 11 minute "matrix gun scenes"], your meter breaks and you will love it."
There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this movie, but for how horrible it is, I ask you, "Why isn't it a classic cult film?"
The writing/dialog is horrible: Captain Kirk or "You created it all to become immortal? Why?" "To live forever"
The editing is amateur - Favorite part is during the matrix scene and while at first a character is carrying a shotgun, suddenly he has 2 pistols then I ask myself why... because it's movie magic!
And it has absolutely pointless cut scenes with the video game popping up and it's not even an updated version of the game. It is the Sega Genesis version.
There isn't one thing I don't hate about this movie, but that's exactly why I love it. I don't know if that constitutes a reason to become a cult classic, but in my book this one should be shown on late night cinema. Sure, if you show it to paying customers, you will have walkouts and refunds to give... but for those few that remain... well, your life won't change and you might even hate yourself a little for liking the film.
Someday, someone might agree with me... maybe when it goes to public domain and they view it on Mystery Science Theater 4000 (given current copyright laws, the year 3000 will have passed when it goes to public domain) but I feel like it is an eventuality for this film.
