Bad Foley work (Duvall eating the chocolate)

Late in the film, when Duvall buys the chocolate bar and begins eating it, you can hear an audible snap each time he takes a bite. Now, it looked to me that the grocer just had the bar in his display case; I didn't see a freezer. And yet for chocolate to be audibly masticated, it would have to be quite hard, as it might be when frozen. It's all the more silly when the preceding dialogue was all about how it was smooth and "melts in your mouth".

Why the director and editor decided to leave this Foley work in the film is odd. Maybe they just overlooked it. And I know it's not really a major point (to understate things). It just annoyed me when I watched it. It sound like Duvall is chomping down on a candy cane, not savoring a chocolate bar.

A thick bar of bittersweet, dark chocolate does snap when you bite into it.

Stop asking such dumb questions and keying on stupid things like a frickin candy bar.

That just proves there is NOTHING wrong with this movie.

Honestly, in the last few years it has been on constantly!!

I was wondering why a general store in a small town in the middle of the prarie would even sell expensive imported Swiss chocolate.Other than that this is one of my favorite westerns ever.

I really like that scene, Duvall trying it, and then giving the storekeeper a piece. I like the snap too - and I don't even like chocolate.

erm, i quite like this post, i think its a valid point. It's my understanding that these forums are for discussion on all things screen related and foley artists are very important to the process.

I thought that in the film boss spearman and charley waite had arrived in town at an autumn (fall) period and that would have brought colder temperatures with it, especially so close to the mountains so for me the chocolate would have been quite hard and "snappy" until it "melts in your mouth".

thats my story and i'm sticking to it hehe.

p.s. i thought the scene where charlies last will and testament was read was brilliant, and if you watch the extras you see why....RIP buddy.

If you are trying to compare milk chocolate, which this was NOT, then your argument would be valid. Dark chocolate doesn't have the fat so it,is harder. And melts in your mouth is definitely a relative term...t hey had never had chocolate before...it was a whole new experience, so our experience of growing up with milk chocolate in our mouths from infancy is waaaay different from having dark chocolate for the first time!

To think that they spent millions of dollars on this movie and make mistakes!!

because it is "REAL" chocolate and not the FAKE milky stuff they package nowadays as chocolate. Also good quality chocolate melts at 36 degrees C -literally melts in your mouth - as the shopkeeper points out.

Dark chocolate always makes a "chocolate snap" sound that depends upon the cocoa quantity and quality. So they didnt make a mistake..

I've bought ordinary Hershey's chocolate bars from the grocery, where they were just sitting on an unrefrigerated shelf, opened them, and broken off a square with a sharp "snap!" So, the Foley work (or actual sound of Duvall biting off the chocolate) is plausible. That being said, this is probably the most trivial criticism of a movie I've ever read or heard.
