Congratulations Keith!!!

I have friends who just saw the movie at the Toronto film festival and they totally loved it and said it was very very well received!! they cannot stop talking about. One of them I know is going to post a review here and it will be glowing. And the trailer is just up today and looks so great! you have obviously done a wonderful job! Can hardly wait to see the movie! thankyou for everything!

One account I read said that the movie recieved a standing ovation at it's conclusion.

I'll add my congratulations too!

That's great news. After the seemingly mixed reception the movie got at Sundance, I was worried that it might be too weird for general consumption. It would be so great if this were a big hit (or even a medium-sized hit).

I can sing the singing. I can think the thinking. But you're not going to catch me feeling the feeling.

Well, I'd take a medium sized hit very happily. Potter will always divide people. As someone who worked on the original said to me, 'if you don't piss off, or confuse some people, you probably haven't done it right!' Remember, too, that the original wasn't universally loved, by critics or audiences, at the time it was first shown on the BBC. People were very split on it. It's only with the passage of time that everyone remembers it as being so embraced. I hope our batting average is good (so far it feels that way), but I don't know if this will ever be a 'mainstream' movie. If it can be an arthouse hit (ala 'Being John Malcovich') I would be very pleased.

'Am I right, or am I right?'

That's a good point. Amiel and Trodd mention on the DVD commentary that it was totally snubbed at the British TV awards that year.

Oh well, I'm excited in any case. With The Singing Detective and a new Coen Brothers film, October is looking to be the most-anticipated month of movies for me in quite a while.

I saw the film at Sundance in January and LOVED it! Of all the films I saw at the festival it was my favorite and very memorable. I think the reason it got some mixed reactions at Sundance is because it was HUGE before it's first screening. People everywhere wanted to see it. The waitress at the Hard Rock Cafe in Salt Lake, the guy serving coffee at Barnes and Noble, everyone wanted to see the film. When this happens, in my opinion, there is bound to be some backlash. How can any film live up to that level of excitement.

I would like to join the others in saying big CONGRATULATIONS to Keith!!! It's a wonderful, original, touching film and I hope it gets a lot of attention.

A very good point about the pre-Sundance hype. There's always that line where anticipation crosses from helpful to 'there's no way we can live up to this', especially with a film this odd and quirky and challenging. I think a lot of people were expecting 'Chicago'. Also, the word hadn't gotten out yet that this was really Potter's project, so a lot of die-hard fans of the original came into Sundance with BIG chips on their shoulders. Between the two, there was a lot to contend with.
