Why all the criticism of "Pennies From Heaven"

Why are some people down on the film version of Pennies From Heaven? I've never seen the BBC version (and I don't know when I ever will, unless I buy a bootleg copy) and I haven't seen the Steve Martin version in over 10 years, but I enjoyed it then. I was always under the impression that the lack of success of the PFH movie had much more to do with audiences' expectations and the general weirdness of the story. Anyway, it certainly doesn't discourage me from the notion that it's possible to make a good movie out of a Potter miniseries. Obviously the author's aims and intentions are going to be different when writing for a 100-minute film rather than a six-part TV miniseries, but it doesn't mean that the shorter version is worthless just because it isn't as "dense" or complex as the original.

Also, whoever said Karaoke is "far superior" to Cold Lazarus should give Cold Lazarus another watch (if you can). I enjoyed it far more the second time I watched it and found it to be (in spite of the sci-fi trappings) an extremely personal and moving story about the end of a writer's life. It could even be more personal in some ways than Karaoke (In Karaoke, Daniel Feeld loses control of his words -- his work -- at the hands of a TV director; in Cold Lazarus he's losing control of his entire *life*!). At any rate, they're both sublime, and properly viewed as two parts of a whole anyway (obviously).

I think you've answered your own question elsewhere, McGonigle.

The lion and the calf shall lie down together, but the calf won't get much sleep.

I loved both, even if Steve Martin over-acts a little in the movie version. The sequence with Christopher Walken is worth the price of admission alone. The TV version for depth and acting, the movie for musical spectacle.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

I loved Steve Martin in Pennies From Heaven. And bradjanet, I think I love you for your Rocky Horror and Baby Jane nods even more!

The film version was a good adaptation especially the way they transported it to the USA, but still pales in comparison to the tv series.

Its that man again!!

Watched that film today. It was actually quite true to its source albeit a lot shorter and in the USA (which was a perfectly reasonable setting). I did prefer the series however but then it was around six hours long and could do a lot more than a two hour film.

I think the film adaptation of 'Pennies From Heaven' worked better than the film of 'The Singing Detective' as I think the story was easier to condense and still pack a punch.

I didn't hate this film and Robert Downey Jr would be a top choice if I were to make a film of one of Chandler's Marlowe novels which shows that I at least think he suited for a Noir character such as the Detetctive and we know he is a good actor in general. But, the film seemed a little rushed; fun but not as thought provoking and brilliant as the tv show.
