He's got Mommy issues - that's all we need to know. We don't need to see hours of why he has them.
Sometimes, not often but sometimes, a story is helped by cutting parts out and leaving more to the imagination of the viewer. I can't say if that's the case here because I haven't seen the original series, but I definitely felt that this movie delivered exactly what was needed, nothing more, nothing less.
Robert Downey Jr's portrayal of the cynical misanthrope was perfect. He had just enough disturbing outbursts to unsettle me while still maintaining my sympathy. If the movie were 5 hours longer and he kept up the explosive pace I can't help but wonder if I would start disliking him, or like you said, if I'd eventually get tired of his bitching.
One way or the other, it's good to know that the writer was involved in both projects, so any changes that were made were probably thought out. It reminds me of how Mel Brooks did the movie "The Producers" in 1967, then did a Broadway musical version in 2001, then in 2005 did a movie version of the musical version of the original movie version. Haha. All three were great in their own way, and it's because the same mind was driving each one.
