Why Gibson made this film
I saw Gibson on Oprah about 10 years ago and he said his favorite TV/Film of all time was The Singing Detective.

Dennis Potter wrote the script, so I don't think this was an unnecessary recreation.
shareThe British version didn't have Robert Downey Jr, who was brilliant (as always) in this version.

I loved the original series and I thought the film was pretty damn good. Obviously a little more sketchy than the series, but kept all the main ideas and threw a different light on some aspects. A little like hearing a good cover version of one of your favourite songs, in fact.
shareas I recall he did it as a Vehicle for Downey to highlight his abilities...
You need to remember How Big Gibson was at the Time, and how deep in the Hole Downey was ...
this film Predates Downey's Rise by the better part of 5 years... people tend to forget he was pretty 'toxic' especially as a Leading Man for quite a while before Ironman and Sherlock Holmes
-- 2001 saw him fired from Ally McBeal and sent to Court Ordered Rehab
True Tjanssend411, he saved Downeys butt. And to this day Downey praises him for it. Actually, Mel did that for Brittney Spears and some other person, can't recall who right now.
The two of them in this film is hilarious. Knowing they are still best friends makes it all the better!
