Do girls like this game?

Are there any girls/women who enjoy this game? If you are one of them, please type a few lines why you like it and what exactly gives you "the kicks".

Thank you very much in advance.

Dear Mrs "LaceNLeather22", glad to know that.

BTW, did you play "Oni" (a stylish cyberpunk game), where a deadly female agent kills tons of enemies (in most vicious ways: breaking necks/spines, beating the guards to death with bare hands, kicking innocent people till they pass out (at the gamer's will), etc.). Try it - I can't imagine that a girl should dislike "Oni".

All the best

Well I'm a girl and in 2002, my brother, me and my boyfriend fell in lust with these games - first GTA3, then Vice City, then San Andreas and then GTA4 - and in all the years we've played these games, I've always been the one they hand the controller to when they can't pass the mission. Does that answer your question? You know shockingly enough, we're human beings too.

Good Day, UK, and thank you - You and other female human beings here seem to be quite groovy (hope I get a correct word - English is not my native language).

Would You be so kind, while You boast:

- to back up your words and help me? I'm stuck in "Vice City" after "Global Films" missions. The only open place for new missions is "Hyman Stadium". Is there any other place to go (my Vercetti purchased all the businesses and, most likely, all available property in the city he could and now is only to collect cash here and there), or should I carry out all racing competitions in Hyman to go further in the plot (my current position is approx 50% in the storyline according to the stats)?

Just to keep this subject here and not to start a new separate thread.

Thanks in advance and my kindest regards,
Andrei

If you have completed the missions 'Cap the Collectors' and 'Keep Your Friends Close...' then the storyline is complete.

The percentage (yours, you say, is 50%) - does not relate to the storyline, but instead the whole game itself.

Tell me more information and I can give you a list of what to do next.

reply

Thanks for the previous piece of advice regarding "Hyman Stadium", Mr "Chilly_Philly". I don't remember such titles as "'Cap the Collectors' and 'Keep Your Friends Close...'" - could you give a hint how to trigger those? The rating of my Vercetti now is "Enforcer".

Did not know 50% was not related to the storyline.

Thanks and regards

What you need to do is complete around 60% of all Property Missions, then you will get a call from Lance Vance telling you to go to the Print Works, where the finale will begin.

Here they all are, ordered in order they should be completed the earn percentage fastest:

- Pole Position Strip Club
[Spend $600 on a private lap dance to complete this asset. Takes around fifteen minutes.]

- Malibu Club
[Complete the four missions 'No Escape?', 'The Shootist', 'The Driver' and 'The Job' to complete this asset.]

- Print Works
[Complete the two missions 'Spilling the Beans' and 'Hit the Courier' to complete the Print Works asset.]

- Kaufman Cabs
[Finish all three missions 'V.I.P.', 'Friendly Rivalry' and 'Cabmageddon'.]

- Interglobal Film Studios
[Finish all four missions 'Recruitment Drive', 'Dildo Dodo', 'Martha's Mug Shot' and 'G-Spotlight'.]

- Sunshine Autos
[Collect all four lists of cars.]

- Boatyard
[Complete 'Checkpoint Charlie' once.]

- Cherry Poppers Ice Cream Factory
[Sell 50 'ice creams' in one go, without exiting the truck, getting, busted, wasted or destroying the vehicle.]

If you would like a full-game 100% checklist, let me know.

That's it. Thanks, Mr "Chilly_Philly" - that's where I failed to score. How should I know that Vercetty was going to complete this asset like THIS? In the game itself there wasn't any hint, was there?

How did You find it out?

Sorry for the late reply :) I haven't played VC for about 4 years but I'll try to help from what I remember.

Have you purchased all the companies? The taxi firm, the car showroom, the printworks, the boat yard, the film studio? And you have to complete all the missions from them too. If you have, then you should receive a phone call from Sonny that will start the last two missions. I can't remember if you have to buy all the companies that you don't do missions for to get the phone call - the ice cream place, the strip club - and all the houses too. But if you've got the cash give it a try. And I don't think you have to do the stadium missions to get the phone call but give it a try too because I really can't remember lol. Hope this helps.

I must say, I have found this whole thread to be very interesting. If you don't mind my asking, Andrei, where are you from? I only ask because my husband is from Turkey and had very similar views on women; for example you mention women fainting at the sight of blood and so on. I am American and have grown up with video games. Also having a younger brother definitely introduced me to violent video games. But I love them! To me there is no better way to relax after a long day than going on a killing spree in Vice City (my favorite GTA game). I also really enjoy picking up hookers then beating them to death to get my money back! Lol. I definitely think that many people think it is odd for a woman to enjoy this level of violence and gore, though. I also really enjoy so-called 'girlie' games like Little Big Planet too. I guess I just enjoy video games in general.

Do you often start random killings in the streets of Vice City? Or maybe you keep it all as violence-free as possible (doing just the job and always getting out of the trouble)? Have you ever killed female characters in the street? Did you take the money packs after these killings? What did you feel?

Dear Mrs "ttttodayjunior",

So, you push the character to the limits? It reminds me the book "Das Maedchen mit dem Niemand Verkehren Durften" (hope I remember the title correctly). It was about that ultra cool girl with uncommon behaviour.

If it were a female persona in the game, would you still immerse yourself into a killing spree?

I may be very wrong but I remember that there was a character named Candy Suxx in the game. Do you have anything in common with that striking quasi-lady?

Were your family members ever shocked when seeing you playing this game (I mean, running about with a chainsaw and gutting the target is not very feminine).

Thanks, sorry, and regards

It somehow makes me sad that a girl liking this game is such a big deal. As a woman I often feel very 'pushed-out' by the gaming industry. It's funny really, I think it's one of the few areas where there is still a lot of inequality between the genders.

Back to the original topic, I love the fact that this game doesn't take itself as seriously as the others in the series (I haven't played iv properly yet.) It's quirky, silly and incredibly funny, and just very fun to play

reply

Dear Mrs "Mechanical",

Perhaps women are more rational? And playing videogames is not a very rational piece of pastime, is it. I remember myself wasting about 20 hours to beat one serious GT level of "Burnout: Takedown" PS2 game. I simply cannot imagine a woman capable of that (mind, I am not boasting). But if there existed such, I would have expressed serious respect to her.

I also cannot imagine a straight woman that has beaten "God of War" with pleasure. I think women can faint during those in-movies.

But I can easily imagine a lady playing “Tetris” all day long.

On the other hand, perhaps, I know nothing about women.

Andrei

Well, here I am I loved both of those games, so over-the-top it was fantastic. I'm not sure what you mean about women fainting though?

And I don't know about gaming being particularly 'irational', I wouldn't say that spending an entire day playing GTA III is a very productive way of using your time but it's definitely fun (this is what the past few days have mostly consisted of for me.)

Perhaps a big part of the issue is that games are never really marketed at women or girls? So it is more difficult for females to get into them? I don't really know, it's interesting though.

reply

Dear Mrs "Mechanical",
deep respect to you from my side.

I remember playing through "GTA III" a couple of years ago when I had a PC. It was quite an experience.

By "faint" I meant women getting sick when seeing all that blood pouring all over in those in-movies.

And while you are here, have you ever played "Oni"? I think (by my simple boy's mind) that this game should just be a real treat for any female. There a cool gal is thrashing crowds of tough men with unbelievable kicks and punches.

Thank you for your kind reply in advance and regards from Archangel,
Andrei

'Glavnoye v cheloveke ne vneshnost, a vnutrennosti.'

reply

I think that all the blood and gore in God of War is just too cartoon-ish to make anyone feel sick. I find it quite funny actuallt, it's so over-the-top

Nope I have never played Oni, is it a fighting game then? I like games with a female lead, although I do find that a lot of the time it feels like she's only there for a bit of eye-candy for the male player The girl in Facebreaker who holds the board up in between rounds comes to mind.
Having said that, Lara Croft is probably my second favourite game protagonist, next to Wander from Shadow of the Colossus

I'm loving GTA III so far, by the way

reply

"Oni" is a cyberpunk fighting adventure game with a leading female hero as enigmatic and cocky as... I don't know who. I have never witnessed such a great character anywhere. No, the female lead is no "eye-candy half-clad blonde with hoity-toity bust size". She is a stylish cyborg-girl (with a very uncertain past) in armour with great stamina and sarcastic lines.

I find it stupid to control an almost naked gal with a huge sword through the minions of hellish predators (remember "Heavy Metal FAKK"? Lara Croft has no appeal to me as well).

The only let-downer is that in "Oni" there is no blood splatting. When Konoko (the female lead) kills somebody, there are just sparkles of red and deadly moaning of a dying villain. Still it’s looking and sounding extremely neat as she breaks some guy’s back with that peculiar cracking sound. And there are great in-movies and a background story, which gets more and more weird as you proceed.

To crown it all I should mention that I played a local version of “Oni” (translated and dubbed in my language – not in English). And still it kept me on the edge of my seat till the very end. I play English versions of the games only. But this one got me hooked. Even these days I’m missing “Oni” (can’t play it, having a PS2 at my disposal only).

Just to keep the Vice-City subject up: I have currently stopped playing the game because... Oh, I don't have time to explain now. Sorry.

See you and your smiling faces later one day here.

Kind regards,
Andrei

reply

I only have a ps2 as well. Is Oni not available on that then? It sounds cool And yeah, I completely agree that it is ridiculous to have a female lead with barely any clothes on pitched against dangerous stuff. Like I always think with Lara, why does she insist on wearing those tiny shorts when she knows she's going to be scaling rocks and jumping around etc.? Her legs must be red-raw, silly girl.

Sometimes I think it really works when games don't have proper blood spattering but just a shower of sparkles or whatever, sometimes that really fits and gives the game something extra With something like God of War though I think it wouldn't be as fun without the blood.

So how come you've stopped playing Vice City? Have you completed it before?

reply

Thank you for this nice communication, dear Ms "Mechanical",

A decade ago I couldn't have even imagined leading a conversation in English with somebody far away.

Before buying a PS2 I read a lot about the console and the choice of games for it on I-net. Yes, "Oni" was on the list of PS2 games (if I remember correctly, it's a game from 2001). If the original version of this game were on sale here, I would buy it (even though I played it through on my former PC many times). And I did not mention the music in "Oni". It's beautiful. It creates the atmosphere of menace, loneliness, and mystery. Oh, sorry, I got carried away a bit. "Oni" is my friend.

As to blood splattering, I wish the games were always giving a chance to choose. For instance, I once played "Messiah" PC game (a cyberpunk masterpiece where you control a little angel who is possessing different characters through the game and who should finally face the dark angel - another artistically weird game from the early 2000s) and I got to know that there was version with more realistic effects concerning combat (including bloodshed) and it really made me think 'Why those guys could not let a player choose which version to play - the game was quite gritty in any case and you can't say that by removing blood you put it into PG category'. I'm surprised that "Messiah" has been quite easily forgotten. The game was nuts and very atmospheric.

Now back to Vice-City topic. No, I've never finished it. I played it up to the “chainsaw” mission only. The only GTA game I've finished is the PC version of "GTA III". And it was long time ago (I remember those cosy evenings when I was playing this game and my mother was admiring it's quality and open world). I've stopped playing because my TV-set is an old 21' CRT, which makes it rather difficult to read the tasks (my eyes are not keen) when they appear on the screen before an actual mission begins (also don’t forget that I am not an English-speaking person). Besides I would like to listen to DTS sound, which is also impossible with my current equipment... Therefore, I put the game off till better times. Perhaps some day I'll be able to get a bigger-screen LCD TV and a proper sound system. Then I'll get down to VC business.

What city are you from? Is it like Vice City? I remember when I came to Amsterdam in 2003 (it was during those "GTA III" days) and I got very excited because the streets resembled Liberty City’s nooks and crannies...

Kind regards from Archangel,
Andrei

reply

Aww that's quite alright Mr AndreiPavlov, I like it when you come across someone on IMDb who you can actually have an interesting conversation with

Oni sounds pretty good from the way you've described it, I shall have to find out more about it and possible pick it up when I have some spare cash. I love games with good atmospheric music too, again Shadow of the Colossus comes to mind. It really adds to the whole experience

It's a good idea to let the player choose how much bloodshed there is, I agree. The only game I can think of that has anything similar is Resident Evil, although in that all you could do was choose whether the blood was red or green. Still, a good idea, and allows for the player to create whatever kind of atmosphere they like.

Aah, I can sympathise with the being unable to read the tasks very well, having only a small TV myself. I found that especially with San Andreas, because for some reason the colours looked quite dark in that so I had to turn the brightness right up on my TV to be able to see the marker on the map properly. It can be very frustrating!

My city has parts which resemble parts of Vice City, although I live in the UK so there is a lot of history to my city and a lot of older buildings which you don't get in these games because they are set in America. But yeah, there are some backstreets and alleyways that have the same dark, dingy, concrete look of places in Vice City. Nothing like the Malibu Club though, hah, I'd love to go there in real life and dance to the cheesy 80s music

What is your first language, if you don't mind my noseyness? You write in English extremely well, much better than a lot of English people in fact, I would never have guessed it wasn't your first language.

Oh, my.

Aah, that's what the media would have you believe. Much the same as how in American TV shows and films 'real' American families are always portrayed as living in huge houses and having two 4x4 vehicles in the garage, as well as a swimming pool in the garden. It's just what the media decides to portray I suppose The majority of us don't have cash to burn though.

I brought this game for my partner when it came out with the ps2. I really brought it so we would have a dvd player. Guess who ended up playing it all xmas evening...me! I friggin love this game and it really got me into gaming. I just wish they would revive it for the 360. There is nothing bad about this game (well maybe that mini helicopter mission) brilliant soundtrack and an amazing story line. If anyone eve asks me what my favorite game is its got to be Vice City, no game since has ever beaten it, not Gears, Halo. Actually Crackdown is a close second to this.

I just have to say... There is not this vast gulf between the attitudes and behaviors of men and women. I mean, there are broad differences on average, perhaps, because of societal pressures and some differences due to gender. But that's about it. You're going to find tons of women who play ultra-violent games up the whazoo, just like you'll find plenty of men who are disgusted by it.
