Marlee's apt scene - help please....

This is definitely one of those movies I had to re-watch to have a better understanding from the very first. One scene, however, continues to allude me

Marlee's apt. She comes in, hits the fridge, grabs some juice and while drinking notices a half-eaten sandwich with roaches crawling on it and the wall. Ewww. Then we see the weirdo strongman dude with the creepy accent.

Ok.....what is up with the roaches? I understand the sandwich, but the roaches? You can clearly see the disgust on Marlee's face when she looks over at them and if it had been that long since she had been home, why did she drink something out of the fridge?

Also, where was creepy dude taking her? To Transylvania?

Perhaps this was all in the book which no I did not read. And before you blast me for not reading it, I didn't even know the movie was based on a book until I came on this board. I happened to run across it while flipping through the channels, saw the cast and thought it was worth watching - which it was :)
