My assessments of all Grisham adaptions.

Just for a bit of fun, I thought I would write what I thought of all Grisham adaptions. Feel free to agree or disagree.

THE FIRM. Well made but too talky and slow. Also none of the characters were very likable (except Buseys) and much of the cast looked downright bored. And how holly hunter got an oscar nomination for her wooden performance baffles me. At least she didn't win.

THE PELICAN BRIEF. My favourite grisham adaption. Film was well-cast, edgy and kept the viewers interest. Excellent performances and great work by alan j pakula...and the locations shots weren't bad either. And I don't care if Gray gratham was written as a 60 year old white man. Denzel made it his own, and good on him.

THE CLIENT. My second favourite adaption. Film was entertaining, well-cast and had plenty of humour. Sarandon, Jones and renfro were good...but Joel schumachers play-it-safe approach took out a lot of the edge of the book. I never really felt the kid was in any real danger. Still a good film.

A TIME TO KILL. Another entertaining film that holds your attention throughout. The film could have been much better, but again Schumachers watered-down Hollywood approach keeps it from going there. Sandra bullock (whose character wasn't even that prominent in the book) is utterly annoying and this is the film I blame for making Matthew Mcconaughey a star.

THE CHAMBER. Undeniably the worst ever adaption of a Grisham book. Grisham himself called it a trainwreck and I couldn't agree more. I place most of the blame on the inept direction of James foley who is truly hopeless. Hackman isn't bad, but oconnell is awful. The costars add nothing. And whats with that stupid scene where O connell gets mugged at a boxing match. It wasn't in the book..and is utterly embarrassing. Heck I might even say it was one the worst films I saw in the 90's.

THE RAINMAKER. Entertaining, very well-cast and finely put together by coppola. But in the end, I found it too lightweight and forgettable.

THE GINGERBREAD MAN. Kenneth branagh was excellent. Apart from that, don't know what else to say.

SKIPPING CHRISTMAS. Never seen it. Don't want too.

THE RUNAWAY JURY. This film is a great return to the edgier adaptions of grisham novels. Well-made with some suspenseful moments. Some good performances and a crackling pace. My only problems were I thought the story was somewhat flawed..and as much as I like John cusack, he really seems out of place in this film to me.

Well there you have it. I have never watched any of the TV series based on his work..and if there are other films out there of his that I missed...I have only seen these ones

Thanks you for reading.

Well done. I have to admit the novels are primarily entertaining page-turners (pretty good ones at that). No surprise that the film are generally entertaining (I've watched most at least twice), but not masterpieces.
My favorite adaptations are, in order:
1. Runaway Jury: great cast (especially the main 4 - including Cusack)and suspenseful, well-crafted story.
2. The Firm: followed the novel very well and some fun twists. Cruise was very good, as was most of the supporting cast (always enjoy Wilford Brimley).
3. The Rainmaker: supporting cast was great(especially DeVito, but also Glover, Rourke and Madsen). Legal/ethical story was good and entertaining.
4. A Time to Kill: I'll have to revisit this one, but most people seem to have it near the top.
5. The Client: I liked the kid actors better than the famous leads. Good movie.

The Chamber: vaguely remember this as dark. Have little desire to re-watch.
The Pelican Brief: just didn't grab me as much as the others.
A Painted House: I really wanted this to be better. Loved the novel as a great non-legal tale.
The Gingerbread Man: least favorite
