Yes the movie did show them kissing, and they did make love, though I don't think they actually showed the sex scene.
They were both getting back at him because when their town sued the gun company, Fitch helped the gun company win. Jeff and Gabby were together the whole time. Jeff was never with Gabbys sister.

I just recently watched the movie so it was all still fresh. Though in saying that some people have said it's different in the book.
They (sigh!) had been high school sweethearts and hatched an extremely long term plan ( since we find out he's 34) for retribution.
