What was the point of Jeremy Piven?

I really like him as an actor, but his character in this film seems pointless and unnecessary. Have I missed something?

Piven's charcter was pointless.

My guess is that Piven began with a larger role which was then edited down, making what remains a bit messy.

I beseech ye in the bowels of Christ, think that ye may be mistaken.

The point was that he was supposed to be the white knight alter ego of Fitch, doing it all out of a sense of combined idealism and altruism.

I'd agree with that contention. His character virtually disappears in the second half of the film.🐭
