Underrated.
After years of hearing the hatred toward this movie, I decided to check it out. Already I'm amazed that so many people seem to jump on the bandwagon without finding anything positive to say at all, which is of course, ridiculous.
In the first ten minutes there is enough to warrant praise:
Visually, this film looks fantastic. The image is crystal clear. The beautiful sets, filled with unusual color schemes and surreal building designs, look as if they've jumped right out of a Tim Burton film. If one frame of this film was taken as a photograph, it would be regarded highly among art critics and artists. And despite the brightness of the film, it manages to create a dark tone (many offended parents seem to forget that childrens' stories are often dark, crude, and mean).
Another aspect of it is its satire on modern America.
I tend to be more lenient towards remakes and adaptations, because I understand how hard it is to please the die-hard fans of the originals, who are often unflinchingly critical. I think it's great that there are so many interpretations and visions for the original stories, and that the original is getting the film treatment.
