After seeing first series replayed again, I have to ask...

What happened? The show used to be clever, but then it tried to pull everything together into some vaguely serious storyline and the whole thing stopped being fun to watch.
As an adult who watched the show as a kid when it first started, I'm actually able to appreciate a lot of the subtleties in the earlier episodes. I think it really went to hell when they started throwing in more heroes than the original team, and started to get too plot heavy. It was fun before, I think it just started to try too hard.

I'll admit it's pretty schizophrenic that way; however the later "serious" epsiodes are not bad (certainly better than most cartoons on these days). I'd also like to know why they felt they had to change direction.
