I like this movie when I first saw it on FX years back and I still love it to this day. You're right, compared to some super hero movies today LXG is still pretty good, especially when compared to movies like X-Men 3, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Spider-Man 2-3, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Thor: The Dark World, Daredevil, etc.
Heck, even if you look at the bonus features and "making of" videos on the DVD you can see how much effort the makers of the movie put into LXG into almost every part of it, be it the costumes, characters, sets, etc. There was a LOT of stuff in this movie they made using props and sets, which alone shows how much effort they put into LXG compared to something like X-Men Origins: Wolverine which had loads of money thrown at it and sucked.
Personally, I think a lot of the hate towards this movie is because of how different it is compared to the graphic novel, but in the bonus features of the DVD the directors stated that the idea came to them for LXG from Alan Moore when he himself was still developing the comic, so by the time the movie had started production Alan Moore was still developing what the characters and stuff were like.
Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.
