Yes it is. But oddly enough, his sacrifice seemed to turn around the fortunes of the ship.

I'll keep an eye out for that the next time I view it. I haven't seen it for a dozen years or so, but that suicide scene has stuck with me.

It is not a scene easily forgotten, especially that last sad look from the poor guy as he sank.
