shareIf it happens, I DO hope Paul Bettany is busy doing something else.
He's a fine actor, I usually like him, but he just isn't Dr. Maturin.
I thought Paul Bettany was perfect for the role. Although if something does happen, I think him and Crowe are too old for the parts. Pretty sure Jack Aubrey was mostly in his 30's for the duration of the series.
Sometimes I think Michael Kelley could have been a good Maturin. Picture him 15 years ago with a pair of round spectacles lol
In the books, Aubrey's age ranged from 29 to mid-forties. He's often described as overweight. Crowe could still do it, and I hope he does.
sharePaul Bettany deserved an Oscar nomination for this role.
I really hope this happens! It's a shame this didn't do so well back in the day. A sequel is long overdue. This is such a fantastic movie.
shareBest news I've heard all year!
shareHope this happens, it's a good job the Napoleonic Wars lasted so long!
shareTHREE years ago.
Any news?
nope. nothing
shareI'm not expecting anything. Now with the pandemic and closure of many theaters, the whole movie industry has to rethink how it does business.
They're not going to be making sequels to movies that failed to make money 20 years ago any time soon.
Budget was an insane 150m. domestic gross 93m, overall worldwide 211m.
Since it came out is well regarded, but not exactly considered a must see classic with hundreds of thousands of fans begging for a sequel.
so yeh I don't think a sequel would've ever happened even without covid (and with covid doubt any 200m 10 part stream series happening )
Well, special effects technology has advanced a lot in the last 20 years, so a sequel could probably be made with a lot of green-screen stuff, which would be waaay cheaper than renting tall ships* and transporting them to the far ends of the world.
But that doesn't mean that anyone but Crowe is, or was, interested in making a sequel movie. There's always a lot of projects floating around "Development Hell", that may have been one of them.

* I've been on the "HMS Surprise"! The dear Surprise was played by an old ship called the Rose, which is anchored in the San Diego Harbor as part of the lovely Maritime Museum. Anyone who's in San Diego with a couple of bucks in their pocket can poke around the ship, but alas they don't let you climb into the rigging.
Think Crowe was just trying to generate interest on twitter so studio would be like 'hey look at this' lol .. he was probably hoping for about 1m likes and 500k RTs 😄
sharemore M&C tweets from Crowe lol
