The writer doesn't know what he wants the conclusion to be. And when you don't know how to end your movie, you are just spittin' in the wind, in my opinion.
1. Is it mutants or weird animals killing people? 2. Or is it an alternate dimension created by the neutron bomb?
it can't be both.
We hear actual footsteps so it seems that something alive hit their car. also, the old man was left by the fire, but why? Just because he told them to leave?
Huh? If they are dead, they wouldn't be alive serving coffee.
OTH if they are part of an alternate dimension then anything goes.
HA! Don't get frustrated just because you can't figure it out right away. You're not supposed to. You're supposed to rack your brain and watch it again and again. Only then will the clues make sense. Oh alright I'll throw you a bone, think of the symbols, and "stay on the pavement!", and the bird...
I have watched this movie two or three times in the last several years, and I love a lot of things about it ... I love the actors Harry Hamlin and Susan Dey, who co-starred together on "LA Law" in the 1980s. The movie is creepy, eerie and suspenseful without being bloody... it is very subtle, which is part of its charm, but its subtlety also can be maddening, as we wonder, What were those creatures and how do people get brainwashed like that? What is the significance of the crow? I like that the movie doesn't spoon-feed us the answers, but I would love to know more. Did the writer have an "answer" in mind, or did he just want to entertain and keep us in suspense? Lester in the jail cell gave us 3 possible explanations, and the movie seems to want us to wonder which explanation fits? I like the mutants theory, but that doesn't explain brainwashing people, or body-snatching... that is more like aliens or Indian spirits.

Either way, it was a highly entertaining movie and I really liked it despite the lack of explanation.
I agree about Harry Hamlin and Susan Dey being great in it and also agree about it being creepy, eerie, and suspenseful. A little gore might have been nice, but it does just as well without it.
Its been years seen I've seen LA Law and I had totally forgotten that Dey and Hamlin had co-starred on that in the 80s. Thanks for the reminder. Maybe that's why they had such good chemistry here.
