what does it mean when it says rating surrendered? Why does it say rating: open? I have never seen that before.

its rated R, thats all you should know.

It was originally aiming for a PG-13, but the MPAA gave it an R. They tried to appeal it, even were thinking of sending it to theatres unrated, but, decided to surrender and take the R.

It is a pretty hard R rating, there was no way in hell this was going to get PG-13

I don't think that it wouldn't have been as good with the PG-13 rating because some of the most clever lines in the film had to do with swearing and the dialouge in this film sparckles off the screen. Kind of like when you read an Elmore Leonard novel.
