Why does Edward burns character carry a lighter when he apparently does not smoke

I am just guessing here but I think that now since smoking was the main stereotype of the "slick" con man or theif and they this stupid idea that they shouldnt have people smoking on movies anymore they replaced the cigatette with a zippo. If you look at "Out of Sight" Jack Foley (George Clooney) plays with a zippo and Karen Cisco (Jennifer Lopez) chews nicorette. I could be way off base with this. Let me know what you think

Call it an another really bad script problem. The script to this film is loaded with them.

i think he carries it because it might come in handy sometime if he is trying to persuade someone to join his team and wants to appear like a gentleman for instance

That's exactly why he carries it. If someone lights your cigarette, it's an in to that person, whether they be a mark or otherwise. If you've seen Spy Game, Redford's character tells Pitt's character to always carry a pack of cigarettes for this exact purpose.
