Fairly good story
Even though I would list this in my top ten movies I enjoy watching, I would by no means say it is a "Great Movie". I would say that it is better then most of the garbage that H-Wood puts out though.
My take on this movie is that as much as anyone can find fault with the process in which the deal is executed, we need to remember that Jake is just "weaving" a tale during the whole movie. And like a good con, a good tale has some of the facts, but not all of them. So if you are looking for holes in the story, or if you are looking for the feasibility of getting a corporate loan with a "LOI", remember that he is just telling a story to ensure that the story seems real to the guy holding the gun, and you the viewer.
We the viewers are basically the black guy (I think his name was Travis?), listening to this story, and like a good con, there is a little truth and a little fabrication just enough for you to follow along with the expectation of continuity and possibility. The black guy, (like us) still doesn't know the whole story, so he is waiting with patience for the story to get to the part of where the money really is and how he can get it back. Towards the end is where the plot becomes weak, when Rachael shoots Burns (Jake), this is where Jake supposedly has little or no control of the story, and it shows because and I agree with most people here on these boards, it was just a little too clean when Rachael shoots Burns, and her and the black guy get into separate cars and drive away???
I do believe that this was an underrated movie, but like most reasonably good movies most of the people that like what H-Wood puts out, don't like movies like this movie. It seems that most people don't want to think when they see a movie; The Usual Suspects & Things to do in Denver when you're Dead are great examples of my theory on this.
Basically like someone else on these boards said: 'It is a story, if you want reality watch a documentary of a bank heist on the History channel.' (I am paraphrasing slightly. I do not remember who said that, but whoever it was...nice job!!!)
