Question about the kidneys (spoilers)

They said in the movie that the main character cut out the organ dealers' kidneys, to my knowledge nothing further was said of this but when Park was in his apartment we saw a bloody cutting board with a knife on it. This might be a stretch but did the main character eat the kidneys? I don't know what other use he had for them, they didn't mention him donating them to the hospital or anything.

reply

The main character meaning Ryu? I.E. not Park?

Wrong to say that I am giving up, right to say that I ain't showing up.

reply

Yes, Ryu. Sorry I'm bad with names. At one point Park got a phone call from one of his associates telling him to watch out, that Ryu was "inhuman" and had cut out the kidneys of the organ dealers. I might be reading into this too much but I thought the bloody cutting board in Ryu's apartment was significant and related to that. It could be that it's just being used as symbolism but I thought it was strange that we weren't shown what Ryu did with the organs.

reply

Been a while since I've seen it. Well like five months. As I recall though, he just cut out the organs as an insult to injury. Kind of like what they did to him. He didn't eat anything. I am totally remembering wrong but he might have donated them to the hospital, though I think that's actually another movie I'm thinking of. So yeah, just think of it as, they did that to him and it lead to his sister's and an innocent girl's death. So not only am I going to kill them, I'm going to take out their kidney's as well.

Wrong to say that I am giving up, right to say that I ain't showing up.

reply

Yeah I kind of figured it would just be that, but it was that cutting board that stuck in my head. I guess it was just used as a device to show what he became, a butcher, in a way.

reply

He did eat them. The last shot we see of the killings is the surgeon/mother grapping a scalpel and then walking closer to Ryu, then it cuts over to Park torturing the girlfriend. The next time we see Ryu, he has a stabwound in the side (where the surgeon cut him) and he's bloody around his mouth, chewing and swallowing something bloody - we don't know what. Later we see the cutting board and learn about the missing kidneys. He ate them.

reply

There's no way he donated them. It takes a lot of skill to remove and transport a viable organ.

reply

I'm pretty certain that it was his way of spitting on them...they stole his kidney and left hims laying on the stone floor, leaving his sister to die. So, he took theirs...I highly doubt he ate them (that would be a stretch even for someone as grief-stricken as him), and you can't just take out an organ, wander in with it in your hand and toss it to the Triage nurse in the hospital...tissue rots too fast, when a hospital transplants they have to remove the organ and place it IMMEDIATELY (like, within seconds) into a cold container designed to keep the tissue from beginning to rot.

If they didn't, from the time it would take to get from the room, to his car, the kidneys would have rotted badly enough as to be utterly useless. It wouldn't be a blackened, rotten mess by any means, but the sterility of the place would have assured, anyone who got the kidneys would wind up with Sepsis...

I think he did eat the kidneys. Let's look at the evidence.

-The kidneys are nowhere to be found.

-We saw a bloody cutting board and knife.

-We saw what appeared to be Ryu chewing on something, with blood on his lips, as he tended to his wound.

I do think eating the kidneys is going a bit far (and crazy) for revenge's sake, but, some cultures (specifically Asian) believe that they can heal or enhance a weak or unsatisfactory part of their body by eating its animal counterpart. (For instance, one would eat an animal penis to improve his sex life.) Perhaps Ryu thought he could heal his kidney, or lack thereof, by eating those of the people he killed.

Just a thought. This is just one of the many confusing things I found in this film. Loved it, though.

reply

It's either he ate them or he tried to stick one inside his open wound.

reply

The first time through, I didn't understand that scene. The second time I got it.

I ask myself what I would have done in his place. If I had those kidneys and everything I cared about was ruined by the owners of those kidney's, and the only thing I could do to get even was to kill those organ-harvesters and eat their organs...and I had lost my sister who was my anchor to reality...I'd have to eat those organs.

You would want me to eat those organs.

reply

He ate them. Park used the idea of this kind of "ultimate revenge" in Oldboy, also. Oh Dae-Su tells Wu-Jin Lee that he's gonna kill him and they will never find his body because he (Oh Dae-Su) is going to eat it.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
