question about that little boy

Park says "you asked if i ever provoked anyone." Then they go to that house in the slums and theres a family passed out and he takes the little boy. He takes the sick boy to the hospital and seems to be trying to get him taken care of. Who was the boy and his family and their connection? I didnt understand this part.

reply

He was the son of his worker, who cut himself in the street.

reply

Is that explained at all? I caught this on Netflix Watch Instantly, and not all the subtitles were there. That's a problem a lot of people are having, apparently.

I had no idea who the kid was. And, yeah, until about two-thirds of the way into the movie, I thought he was having sex with his sister. I'm one of those. Sorry.

reply

In the dialogue? No, it's not explained. However, Park is prompted to mention him when he looks at the cut on his hand which was sustained as he tackled the guy in the street. Also, the guy from the street is shown lying dead on the floor with all the children he poisoned because he couldn't afford to feed them - including the one who survives (for a while...)

reply

Ohhhhh! I did not understand any of that. It makes so much sense now, and it makes Park's character so much more compassionate. Thank you!

reply

Poisoned...
Hmmm... ok. i'll buy that. (makes sense)
Is that in the dialogue anywhere? Or are you just inferring?

reply

its not in the dialogue that he poisoned his family... but you can see his mouth bubbled... and the slices of uneaten pizza... and the whole family died at the same time... so it definitely wasnt from starvation...

reply

Theres also a small bottle next the pizza that looks like a bottle of medicine or poison or something, you are to assume he poured it over the pizza before they all ate and died.

reply

How the heck did you know they were poisoned? Damn - I normally pride myself on being able to pick up everything from foreign films but I completely missed this and the cut hand connection to his old worker.

Which reminds me! He cut himself so comically with that box cutter, does anyone know if that was an actual Korean symbol on his chest?

reply

When they go to the house in the slums where they find the little boy, one of them says that it's where Peng lives, and Peng is the worker that President fired and cuts himself outside President's house.

I just identified "Peng" with the game Dead Space, so I giggled every time they mentioned Peng.

reply

I thought he was having sex with his sister too.

reply

What made you think that?

reply

It's actually a common misconception. Simply the looks of Asian actors for someone that's not too familiar with them. I usually have this issue with Takashi Miike's yakuza films, where you have too many characters. I end up confusing one with another.
You know that stereotype, "all Asian people look the same". Even if it's not true, for the untrained eye, the sister and girlfriend can look pretty similar.

It's called "cross-race effect", and it's a documented condition. It's easier to identify different characteristics in your own race than on different races. As a caucasian, I had problems with The Departed, for example, DiCaprio and Matt Damon being kinda similar. I assume that this problem was more pronounced for Asian people.

Asian cinema understood this problem. And they made more obvious differences in movies that are meant for western markets. Age differences, different hair styles, in order for other races to have an easier time making difference between the actors.
