Questions about 'Elise' (spoiler)

1.If Miles Corrigan's motive is to avenge Sophie's death by killing all those who he thinks knew the truth yet still sent Sophie to France, then his targets should be Hilda Pierce, Sir Ian Woodhead and Elizabeth Addis. But why did he try to kill Eric Caplin since there's no indication that he knows the truth?
2.If Peter Hawtrey left SOE and disappeared before Sophie was sent to France, then how chould he accept Elizabeth Addis's inquiry and become a suspect?
3.Did Sir Ian learn the truth after Hawtrey told him or did he realize it long before that, judging from Hilda's final conversation with him?

But Miles was an RAF pilot and not a member of the security services, so it's unlikely he would have been aware of either Sir Ian Woodhead or Elizabeth Addis who belonged to the higher and the shadowy echelons of MI6 and SOE.

I'm not sure about Addis, but he must have learned about Sir Ian from Peter Hawtrey.

At first I thought he was just trying to eliminate everyone who could be the traitor in order to avenge Elise's death, but at last it turns out that he knew the truth all along, which makes his attempt on Caplin totally make no sense. Another thing is he could have told Foyle that at their first meeting, and the only reason he didn't do that is because if he did, that would leave Foyle nothing to do in the second half of this episode.
