I've come to expect mediocre American accents from British actors in British productions, but listening to the actor playing 'Clayton Del Mar' in some scenes make a cartoon out of a 'fat cat' American accent takes it to a new low.
I'm guessing there are a fair number of less well known American actors who would be affordable and willing to take on the role, and British actors who could do the accent without damaging viewer's eardrums.

If you think thats bad, try being from Maine and listening to actors try to do that accent. Butchers most of them, the worst being Tom Bosley on Murder She Wrote.

It's pretty bad, but nowhere near as bad as Dick Van Dyke's British accent.

in the whole series because they are exaggerated and sometimes cartoonish. It is a mystery worthy of Christopher Foyle why the production company didn't use actual Americans when virtually all of the other production values were so high.
At least John Mahoney was "real" (though he was English the first 19 years of his life).

I'm glad you mentioned John Mahoney. I only found out recently he was English born. I loved him in Frasier as Martin Crane, can't fault him playing the part of an American. However, if you think the English ( and all counties etc) and the Americans with all their accents can complain, nobody can do a decent Aussie or a Kiwi accent with the exception of Merel Streep. She came close. Otherwise they seem to think we are a direct descendants of the East Enders.
