Sam and Andrew---A better pairing?

Just that. I thought she and Andrew should have been together. Just me, but I find her MP husband a bit a bore. Too much talk of politics.
Anyone agree? Whatcha all think?

I like the aspect that he is less sexy, more "durable" for Sam.

Agree that they rather dropped the ball with Sam's husband. Although I guess he is alright. Just not worthy of Sam. Andrew was not good enough for her though. Milner came the closest for me.

I believe the creator of the series intended to have Sam and Andrew together at the end, but the actor who played Andrew, Julian Ovenden, chose to leave the series. He was therefore forced to find her a new love interest.

I found it hard to believe that Samantha would be happy as an MP's wife. Adam Wainwright seems like such a bland character, not the sort to attract Sam at all. I could see her falling for some dashing MI6 agent after she and Foyle start working there, but this chap? This earnest, slightly geeky do-gooder aspiring politician sweeping Samantha Stewart off her feet? Nope, can’t see it. The fact that there was little chemistry between Weeks and the second actor playing Wainwright didn’t help.

They do have a way to legitimize the relationship though. I would guess that the "daring do" side of Sam's character is catered for by her own war / post-war exploits. Looking at her background 2 bishops and a vicar kind of thing there would be quite an imperative to do some good that would have been instilled since birth, or near enough anyway. Adam could be her way of doing good and being part of both world's. Being a specifically Labour MPs wife would emphasize that as well.

MI6 by day, MPs wife by night. Best of both worlds. Opposites attract and all that.

Adam was much more interesting in s6, when he was owner of an inn that was trying to get the hang of managing. I am not sorry that the inn was written out, as it had run its course and it was time to move forward with something else. Adam of s6 was cheeky and fun, and played by a handsome actor with a lot of charisma, not to mention great chemistry with Honeysuckle Weeks.

They had to recast Adam for s7 and completely botched it by casting an unattractive actor with no charisma and no chemistry with Weeks. And the worst of it was turning him into a boring MP. There was lots of potential to make him interesting. Ffs, in s6 he told Sam he had worked in Bletchley during the war.

Personally, I would have enjoyed seeing Sam and Andrew together, and they could have recast Ovenden. But they chose to write a new love interest. And it worked out well enough in s6, but went sour in s7 due to recasting the wrong actor, and turning the character into a boring mp.

Her MP husband got recast into a... I can't say anything charitable. Obviously Sam was meant to be with Andrew, twice, but Julian Ovenden twice turned down the chance to keep with the show long term. No reason Andrew couldn't have segued into intelligence or politics had Ovenden continued with the show. I absolutely think she was better off with him because she was intended to be!

reply

I'd rather Andrew being recast. Don't know why they never did that.

reply

I ceased to have respect for or enjoyment from Ovenden after he quit FW to go become a "star" in the US.

Then he came back and joined the cast of another show in which a popular actor quit to seek "fame": Downton Abby!

reply

And bloody Max Brown did the same damned thing, which is the first reason why we got stuck with such a dire Adam Wainwright recast!

It's a real shame that we saw very little of Andrew after the war. I loved the close, gentle relationship between him and Foyle. Pairing him with Sam, however, would have been a bit too "neat and tidy" and convenient, imo. They could have written in another woman as his wife, and generated some good "family" storylines, maybe with a few scenes set in the City, where he ended up working.

I agree that the second Wainwright actor had no chemistry with Honeysuckle Weekm. The political stuff was okay, but not particukarly gripping because the character was so bland and insipid.

reply

yes, i thought Andrew was much more fun. her husband is dull.

reply

I'm a huge fan of Julian Ovenden, but, wasn't fond of him and Sam together

I thought Sam and Adam were cute when he was Max Brown, but, just didn't work with the second actor

I always wanted Sam and Milner together. I loved them together
