It sucked!!!
Here's a case were the remake was vastly superior to this piece o' tripe. An hour and forty minutes I'll never get back.

Typical braindead troll who can't understand anything subtle...or not "american"
shareActually, I'm quite nice looking. Not American either. I'm Cuban. There was nothing subtle about this movie. You know, maybe I am brain dead...because I watched this clap trap!
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
I actually think the remake sucked. Despite the subtitles, this one was great.
shareFair enough. At least you offered a suggestion without being insulting. Thank you for being civil. Subtitles don't bother me. Poor acting does.
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
Vegas, to say simply that the film "sucked" shows you lack cultural understanding. I think you just missed the subtle nuances of this film. The film doesn’t follow the clichéd Hollywood formula - that is what actually makes it so good! It's more the thinking mans horror movie. The film creates an emotional mood that you have to plug into; if you don’t pay attention I can see that you would misunderstand and miss the meaning in the story.
I found it a beautifully dark visually powerful film. The claustrophobic mood created by the cinematography and the acting was perfect. 10/10.
Hello Jeremy. I dunno. I've travelled a bit. I'm not American, so Hollywood doesn't play into it. Married a two Asian women; they've given me some insight into their culture and values. Watched tons of foreign films with many different languages. Seen some great ones. Suffered through many, many hours of subtle nuances of film like this. I've seen better Japanese horror shows...I mean, movies...
So, "sucked" might sound a bit declasse, but it captures the essence of what I was trying to convey. "Disappointing?" Nah. That doesn't do it. "Disconcerting"? Nah. Doesn't grab me. "Inspired?", "Thrilled?", "Mesmerized?"...nope, nope, nope. "Sucked" just rolls of the tongue.
In all seriousness, you sound like an educated viewer, moreso than me, so, I appreciate your take on this movie. Thank you for taking the time to share your sincere and perceptive opinion. I just didn't like it. It bored me. After all of the many films I've watched, I've got an opinion, too. It may be a simple one, but, like Daffy Duck used to say: it's all mine all mine.
I will miss Joel Siegel. He was a gentle, likeable man.
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
Dark Water is my second favorite Japanese ghost story, my favorite is Ugetsu Monogatari 1953
shareHaven't seen that one. I'm not sure if "Another Heaven" would rank as a ghost movie, but, out of all of the Japanese horror movies or sci-fi, mystery, whatever you want to call it, it is the one I enjoyed the most.
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
Vegas, you mentioned twice your not American, but the way you communicate is very "Americanized".So I'm guessing you haven't lived in Cuba in a long time.So where do you live,it couldn't be America, could it?
shareWow...this was from last August.
However, you asked, I'll answer.
I was born in Cuba in 1952. I came to the US in 1962.
I spoke no English when I arrived. It took a while but I learned it so well, I had to re-learn my native language by taking classes in high school and college. I became very Americanized because I was the only Cuban/Hispanic/Latino in my neighborhood in those years. I grew to love the Beatles and the Temptations at the same time.
When I got older, I traveled a lot throughout this country, to Europe, the Caribbean.
I speak, read and write English very fluently. I read and write Spanish very expertly, although I don't speak it as well as I once did.
I live in Forest Hills, New York.
I have no qualms answering your question. I took exeption to earlier ancontributor that found my opinion to be typically American. Another hinted that I lacked the intellectual capacity to understand other cultures. Wrong on both parts.
It's easy to pass judgement in a dismissive, disrespectful manner when you don't have to face the other party in person.
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
it's true. "sucked' does just roll off the tongue.
i disagree with this 'sucked' but i disagree more with people who think you're 'so hollywood' and 'stupid' just because you like a remake. i hated Ringu, but loved The Ring
Go Vegas! i think you're funny, even if no one else can see it
Man! It's been so long since I started this thread. It was all in fun. Some people started to hurl insults. That's okay. There's not much courage on display when things are not communicated face to face.
Thank you for the compliment and encouragement. My wife sometimes laughs at my jokes. She changes the locks on me too once in a while.
Much appreciated!
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
You're of cuban decent, but you're not a cuban if you're living in New York, sorry. Unless of course you're NOT a citizen- my mistake.
This is such an old thread. I've moved on. I've grown my hair, shaved my beard. I'm taking banjo lessons. I've traveled to exotic places like Brooklyn. I've learned to use the remote control with my right hand....Adios...
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
I've seen both the Japanese and American version, and ... I can't see how the American was vastly superiour except in using up a larger budget.
I felt that the remake tried to deliver more scares, thrill and chills than the original, but in the process lost what made the original so great. It's the original film that delivers an ending that is more emotionally charged and carries more weight...
Trite? If any film of this pair is trite, it's the remake. Not much of the remake stands out as remarkably strong, but the impact of the original stays with you long after film has finished.
But still, if you liked the remake, then ok... Not every film suits everybody, but "sucks" does not fit on the original.
After having started this train of thought two months ago, I've moved on with my opinion. I've found more movies to really like and some that I would have been better off switching over to a sports or food network for the time I spent feeling my beard grow.
I'm changing my tune since "Tony Takitani" made me want to walk in front of oncoming traffic...
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
You may wish to avoid Bu San (2003)... (aka: Goodbye, Dragon Inn)
It doesn't suck either, but it is a very slowly paced movie.
I'll probably read up on it and watch it. I continue learning more about movies and new ways of seeing things through the eyes of others. "Tony Takinani" had some very haunting moments. Some were clever. Some were poignant. The pace didn't bother me. I just found it so very depressing. To see this person gradually smile and come out of his shell, lose his wife, then recede back to his solitude was heatbreaking. The viewer shows more emotion than the subject.
Thank you for the heads up on Bu San. I'll be looking for it.
I have the antidote: Three Seasons or the Vertical Rays of the Sun.
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
I bought Bu San used for something like 8 dollars from BlockBuster... Not a scratch on the disk (it obviously was not a big rental item for them), and so far I've watched it twice. (The second time was better.)
It is quite different from most movies (very little dialog and action). I felt the movie was rather poetic.
I'll see if I can find it. Anyone who likes the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Beatles should be listened to. Thanks again...
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
Well that's all fine and dandy, but Bu San is closer to Brian Eno or Philip Glass, or maybe even Laurie Anderson (O' Superman) than the Beatles...
shareWrong. The remake was horrible compared to the original. I feel sorry that you didn't get it.
The ending with the building looming up behind the daughter as she understands and forgives her mother was awesome directing.

You are not worthy of Dark Water! Go watch watered down American remakes!

Good choice. Enjoy it with fine chardonnay. Bon appetit. I'm off to see an American remake of "Fulltime Killer" starring Bruce Willis and Joe Piscopo.

How can anyone say that the remake was better than the original is beyond me. I will never understand people like you, really.
They took a GREAT horror movie and turned into an amazing piece of cr@p. I don't mean to be offensive towards you, but your opinion amazes me specially because you appear to be a person of average intelligence.
Since I made my first set of comments almost a year ago, and just answered the other genius' comment about a week ago, I'm not sure if your remarks are directed towards me. That's the hindrance I face being a person of average intelligence and being a person like me. If you're taking a shot or two at me, enjoy it. I'm almost crushed. Let me find a moving bus to walk in front of...goodbye cruel world.

if anyone is still going to read this post, here's my take on it and it's somewhat along the lines of vegas' original post... I haven't seen the remake however so my comments are limted to this movie which I believe is a little overrated, and so far off I felt I just had to post.
I was really surprised to see some posters waxing lyrical about subtle emotional themes, implied plot elements etc.. etc.. the film has a few clearly presented familial thematic elements and that's it, alongside ham fisted 'boo she's there' suspense moments that are boring and utterly predictable for viewers of ringu etc.. a shining reference, wow let's give it some credibility...
This film neither works as a drama, a thriller, a horror, a combination of the previous, or as an allegory for the effect of divorce on parent/child relationships or whatever else you might want to generously embue it with. Oh and the difficulty of categorization in this case is not a strength. The only interesting avenue to explore would be the possibility of real mental collapse in the mother as the film unfolds and she lives her personality disorders and childhood fears through the ghost story. However I don't think this stands up to scrutiny either unless someone can convince me otherwise.
My intention is not to offend anyone, it does seem however that in this case, on this board, with this score and reviews, that some people have lost their critical vision and joined the I'm sophisticated because I prefer the less literal original with subtitles brigade.
I am however sure the remake is awful as is the vast majority of remade Hollywood fair, the wicker man being the most arrogant and unecessary of most.

I'm from Argentina. Around here ALL foreign movies are subtitled (except the ones originally in spanish and those aimed at kids) It's not about being a snob. I've seen the remake and I've seen the original. The remake blows, and I don't say this because I think there is some kind of "subtle emotional themes, implied plot elements etc", I just really liked the original as a plain horror movie. The remake was just plain horrible.
you know your lying. has the cia been making you push too many pencils?
shareSaw the remake first and HATED it! Absoulute crap! Saw the original last month and really enjoyed it. It was put together really well with a thicker plot and very clever scares.

Wow...What's scarier is that I wrote this back in 2007.
I'm a new person.
I've changed my ways.
I've been re-born.
I've found a new purpose and viewpoint of life.
I'm more open to new ideas and am much more sincere.

Thank you for not insulting me, jicc23
I have discovered that the movies don;t suck as much as some of the readers that "contribute" to these threads.
Much appreciated.

I was just about to say, this may be the longest running thread ever.

I have always wanted to contribute to an ongoing good cause....this ain't it.
Thank you for not insulting me.
I'm running out of snarky comments for a thread that has lasted longer than it took to write, cast, film, distribute, sindicate and forget this suck-o flick...
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
I enjoyed the movie. Not my favorite movie by any means but it wasn't bad at all. No plans on seeing the remake as Hollywood tends to screw things up when they do remakes. I saw 2 of the Grudge films (the original) and don't plan on seeing the Hollywood version of that either.
I don't mind subtitles at all. I've seen enough movies with them but I would prefer to watch a movie with subtitles at home vs. at the theater in case I miss something and need to rewind that part.
I have watched both and I like them both :o) and your snarky remarks are the only reason I read the entire thread, you are a funny guy :-D
Been there, done that!

Oh, thank god - I already thought there would be no zombie-like repetition of a lame cliche in the entire post.

This thread has lasted longer than two of my marriages....
I've been married four times. My first wife was African-American, my second, Chinese, my third, Italian.
My present and the one who will be my last wife is also Chinese, born in Hong Kong.
She's brought joy to my life and lessened my sarcasm to a small degree. I am still allowed to be s snarky and write or say things like this movie still sucks today....
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
You know, you don't really need to pop back in here to reply to others' posts... people who move on, move on.
shareWhy? I kinda get a kick out of still getting responses back to something I posted eight years ago. Nothing to move on from.
I've gotten nasty responses and friendly ones. The insulting ones can't hurt me from cyberspace. The nice ones remind me of how pleasant it is to correspond in a civil, even if anonymous, manner.
....and yes; In my opinion, this movie still sucks the big one.
Cheers....
You're looking for me and you're going to find me...
True, but you keep saying you've moved on...
so, have you or haven't you?
as an aside, how do you know when someone responds?
Hi frankey200,
As a courtesy, I always respond back unless the insults start to fly. There's no courage in slinging barbs unless it is face to face.
As for your second question, I'm set up to receive e-mails notifying me when I get a response.
I did so when I first joined IMDB but don't remember how I went about doing so.
I'm barely computer competent. So, I'm sorry that I can't direct you better.
Me not so smart....Cheers
