Well, it didn't get worst movie of all time, just the worst reviewed movie of all time. The lowest percentage of reviewers liked this movie out of any movie since Rotten Tomatoes began (the oldest movies on that list are from 1999).
shareTheir whole rating system is flawed... plenty of other movies got lower average ratings, but somehow were considered "better." I mean "Date Movie" and "See No Evil" got lower average ratings but were ranked way up in the 60s and 70s on the list.
I don't get how if everyone gives a movie a C, it's somehow worse than a movie that gets almost all Fs, with one or two As and Bs, but there's inconsistencies like that throughout the list. (Seriously, is ANYTHING really worse than Epic Movie?)

house of the dead was worse than alone in the dark
shareThe whole rating system is not flawed, what they did was take into account a number of factors to give this the worst movie of all time rating. You list that date movie, epic movie and see no evil are worse movies than this. That may be true, really, it's all just of a matter of opinion anyways. However, these are cult genre films that are never inteded to be a massive "hit" if you will, grossing over 40 or 50 million in the box office. This movie needed to reach 85 on opening weekend to be considered a success.
But the reason this film gets rated the worst movie of all time is due to a number of reasons... I will bore you with a few.
This movie was supposed to be a 14A movie with a mass audience and be as popular as Lord of the Rings sort of idea. In the end, the movie ended up costing over 70 million dollars to produce. The studio then paid millions of dollars in publicity, advertising and promotions for the movie. The film had the highest numbers for the first showings of the evening for most theatres around north america, with a record drop in preceeding shows (i.e. 7:30 vs 9:30 shows). This lead to a TOTAL box office revenue of 14 million dollars, one of the worst returns for a studio in box office history.
The writer of the screenplay also talks about his passion for this project, how hard he worked on it, etc. and changed the script 2 weeks before production to include Lucy Liu as agent Sever instead of a man, all based on the "idea" by Antonio Bandares. How can you be passionate about something, and change everything in a heartbeat when the lead actor suggests it... rediculous! The plot lines are rediuculous. There are 1000 United States Federal Agents in VANCOUVER???? Apparently, Bandaras' character KNEW George Henry's character all along, but it makes no sense plot wise. And when he reunites with his wife, there is no emotion at all... worst directing ever. Oh, and apparently, Ray Park's character (AJ Ross, who is also Darth Maul) is the father of Lucy Liu's child... yeah, I'm dead serious, see if you can figure it out!
Anyways, these are just a few reasons why this is actually the worst movie of all time. There may be worse, but in studio feature blockbuster films, this is the worst.
I've never seen this movie, but that RT list is the reason I came on this board... haha. Getting reviews more terrible than an Uwe Boll movie? That's almost an accomplishment, in a weird way.
shareHouse of the Dead is by far the worst movie I have seen in my life...
I loved the Alone in the Dark PC game, but the movie was trash to say the least..
The funny thing about the bottom 100 of RT is that Lucy Liu is in a LOT of those movies.

There's something really wrong with that list.
Most of those movies I haven't seen...about 96 of the list.
But the ones I've seen I don't agree that they are bad.
i agree with Rotten Tomatoes
