Were Ecks and Sever former lovers?
... and was the boy actually their child? It looked like they shared a past secret. Did I miss something?

**Spoiler Alert**
No, they werent former lovers- in fact, they didnt even know each other at the beginning of the movie. The child is son of Bandares (Ecks) and Rayne Gant/ Vin Echs (the woman at the start of the movie). Lucy Liu (Sever) kidnaps the child because Robert Gant is responsible for Liu's child being killed. She also knows Robert Gant put a deadly microscopic machine in the child. Rayne Gant and Ecks both believed each other to be dead but become reunited during the course of the movie. Ecks and Sever only found out about each other during the first big shoot-out and looked up information on each other.
Thanks for all the excellent information. I wondered because in their first hand-to-hand fight, they exchanged sympathetic looks that seemed to indicate they knew each other. Actually, it lead to their becoming allies later. Ecks was doing his job, but of course he hated Gant, their mutual enemy.
