I was on her board, and everyone is saying she's a terrible actress and some said she even stopped them from watching the wire. I always thought she was incredible on the wire and one of the most consistently great cast members so I'm a little confused as to what all the hate is about.
For some reason she came across to me as trying to hard, making the performance slightly unbelievable. Wendell Pierce as Bunk occasionally gave off a similar vibe to me, basically being generic angry cop man.
Glad I am not the only one who liked her character. She remains me of Anna Gunn on Breaking Bad, a female trying to get the men to do what's right, and being hated for it.
"Hamburgers, the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast." - Jules Winnfield.
She got a lot of unfair stick for just playing a character the way it was written. She always made me laugh with her looks of disbelief whenever Walt was lying to her.
She's phenomenal on season 1. The problems is after she gets shot her story just doesn't go anywhere interesting. She climbs the latter so to speak in the detective ranks but thats about it aside from her almost turning into McNulty in season 3. Then she ends the show snitching on her friends. I love the character but her arc really ended on such a down note.
I didn't think she was a bad actor just terrible story arc. I feel like after season 1 they really didn't know what to do with her, especially since they had planned on killing her off.
I think snitching on her friends was the right way to go since what they were doing was so terrible, I had a lot more respect for her character at the end of the show than I did McNulty or Lester.
agreed, it was the right thing to do, but I still didn't like it. She did her duty as a law enforcer but if I were in her position I would not have snitched. I guess thats why I'm not a cop.
I've heard of this criticism as well, many time before. I was on that train, thinking that she came off as too 'angry lesbian' with a forced accent that sounded more ghetto than urban Baltimore.
However re-watching season 1, I've come to realize that the issues her character had may have been more of a result of the writing than the acting.
The whole episode where she gets shot during the bad deal felt more like Law & Order than the Wire. The artsy cinematography (overhead shots for example) of the sensational scene doesn't feel very consistent of the simple realism typical of the show. Not my favorite episode, not my favorite character but that's not her fault lol.
An interview had Sohn discussing her nerves on set that would only get worse as she would often forget her lines on set. She said it took time to get comfortable into her character. Initially she also believed the show was doomed for cancellation after the first season. By the time she found out from her on screen lover that she was to die, she was fighting the writers to keep Kima alive.
With all that said, what Sohn did for the city of Baltimore is commendable. She truly gave back to the city what she could and more.

That scence is a masterpiece in my eyes. It was every bit of Wire-style cinematography, editing, sound mixing, ect. The sound mixing is amazing with the sirens basically taking the place of where a score would be.
