It sucked.

Not funny, not fun.

I don't think it was all that bad but I wouldn't exactly call it a 'comedy' either! I can't say that I laughed out loud once - a lot of the humour is very American or racial humour that I just don't get as a white, english girl. I enjoyed it in a bizarre way but I wouldn't see it again

reply

Wow, are you serious? I couldn't stop laughing. This movie is full of cultural references and stereotypes. I mean come on...if we can't laugh at each other and ourselves, then what is there to laugh at. People need to lighten up and have some fun. I get called "Honkey" and "Cracker" every day at school, I just laugh and you know why? Because it's funny! Crackers are a toasted brown/orange color, I'M PEACH!!!! Honkey, I forgot where that came from, but I don't honk! Unless it's on purpose...Anyways, this movie is funny, but different strokes for different folks. Whatever.

i agree - it sucked so hard i had to lash myself to the seat to prevent getting pulled into the screen.

lets set aside the whole racial thing - which was a big problem.

but the premise has been done so many times. "whats up doc". curiously funny off-beat woman enters life of uptight upper-class man. upsets his life. he learns from her and lives happily ever after. "the house-sitter" a steve martin / goldie hawn movie where an curiously funny off-beat woman enters the life of an uptight upper-class man. upsets his life. he learns from her and lives happily ever after.

and "mary poppins" and "sound of music" - curiously funny off-beat woman enters the life of upper class man and children, upsets their lives, teaches them the meaning of love, rights the relationships with the kids, and they all live happily ever after.

and "youve got mail" where a man and woman meet through the internet only to find they arent who they think they are. etc...

not an original idea in the whole film

i don't really go to see films that are advertised on tv, but the clips they showd for bringing down the house looked funny so i whent with a friend. i thought it was a great film becuse it let me catch up on some need sleep!

Funniest movie I have seen in a while.

When people find stuff like 'Kung Pow-Enter The Fist' and 'Anger Management' hilarious and 'Bringing Down The House' 'stupid' and 'unfunny', there is a serious problem...

But don't forget it's a comedy. I sincerely did not enter the cinema expecting any serious social critique from it.

I believe that you missed the whole poibnt of the film! In what part of this film is putting out to the world that one race is more racist than another? Are you saying that the few racist remarks in this film do not get said by non-black races? My friend, if you beieve that, you live in your own little world! The point of this film is that what ever problems you're having in your life, help can appear in the strangest of forms. And it does'nt matter what colour they are because EVERYBODY has compassion & a heart which makes this a fun, non-serious, up beat story. 7/10

Thanks for reading.

Damn, relax chico! The movie was not as horrific as you let on. I honestly laughed out loud numerous times. To each his own, right? True, most of the comical parts did lay in the racial slurs and a lot of it was pretty damned funny to me. But, hell, that's reality! Racism exists; everywhere! Black, white, hispanic.....there are racial slurs in and of every culture! Don't tke it so seriously. It can be offensive to an extent, but on the other hand it can be taken on a lighter note and laughed at. Like Betty White's character, Mrs. Kline. She is an obnoxious, uppity, cracker-jack with an Archie Bunker convicton. And Eugene Levy's character, Howie...and Charlene's slightly exaggerated ghetto-ness. He was HYSTERICAL in his jungle fever role and she did an excellent job making hers funny. But, the fact that there are actually ignorant ass people out there with belief systems like Mrs. Kline's makes it easier to find humor in than to get angry over. At least for me. I live in the dirtiest of the "Dirty South" which is swarming with these types. People that HATE to see an interracial couple or think that all black people or hispanics are lazy and stupid. That is, of course, rediculous. But it exists on all sides. There are just as many black folks that hate all white folks, before ever even talking to them. And vice-versa. THANKFULLY, most of these douche bags are gradually dying out and tolerance is being taught to their already tainted children. So one day, hopefully sooner than later, maybe things won't be quite so naturally segregated. Wishful thinking perhaps, but optimistic.

like my "novel-length" commentary?.....no?....chew on it, cod-piece!

This was one of the worst comedies that I have ever seen. I've noticed some responses from those who really enjoyed the film, and although I can respect their opinion regarding the movie being strictly on a acting level, and not to be taken rather racially seriously, the movie just was not funny. I believe that the director of the film stepped a bit too far exploiting the racial comic notes, which we have all laughed at in past comedies. There is a way to do it, without running away with it, and making it look real stupid, without any lessons to be learned from it.

reply

All those movies actually sucked.

Hard!

I thought all 3 were mediocre--at least Kung Pow did make me laugh a few times.

I'm pretty sure that this film wasn't meant to be centered around racism or what have you. It was just about the cultural ignorance that engulfs our ever-falling society.

Bringing Down The House was simply hilarious...Maybe some of u are angry because it made fun of White People....But It Made Fun of ethnicities too....IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!!!!!

Tae-Bo....SEVEN DAYS A WEEK!

I thought it was the best movie ever so what if they make a few racial jokes! its a stinkin movie! thas what they do! its not meant to offend anyone. the worst it does is make people laugh and thas not wrong is it!

reply

i loved the movie! i was 14 when i saw this movie and i had my 13 year old friend come to see it to. the funnist part of the movie i thought was when. queen latifia was teaching steve to be more sexual and they got on the couch and started humbing when the nextdoor neighboor a.k.a. betty white came in with is son and they both saw them inm action! everyone in the movie theater including me and my friend where laughing and claping so hard! the other real funny part was when queen latifia was betting up the one white chick in the bathroom. on a scale form 1 to 10 i give this movie a defint 10! p.s. sequal?

reply

Wow,
I'm glad message boards weren't around when I was 14. Anyway, this movie just sucked, and don't give me any of that black/white BS. I thought Undercover Brother was pretty funny, I actually own Dolemite and Blazing Saddles is one of my all time favorites. I'll make fun of white people just as much as I make fun of blacks (or Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Eskimos, whatever). This movie simply wasn't funny. It only produced a few laughs, was completely unbelievable, and it used racial stereotypes to no effect.

It's only an island if you look at it from the water.

reply

The only thing I actually found myself making some sort of a noise that could be considered a laugh was when Queen Latifah moved the gun and said something like, "No, you hold it like this." Otherwise, it was just a really dumb movie. It didn't make fun of racial stereotypes, it just showed a few out of many and didn't do it so that it wasn't funny at all. It doesn't surprise me that someone 14 or 13 found it funny because I can't imagine anyone besides them thinking it was even close to being entertaining. If you want to see a good racial stereotype thing, see the Jive part of "Airplane".

It had its moments, but truth to tell, it was really mediocre and if you saw Anger Management, the opening scenes setting up the main characters, mirrored each other very closely as if they were written by the same person (the same script doctor?)

It wasn't that I was offended by the material as much as it was weird. Maybe if it took place in the South instead of L.A. it would make sense. The whole thing seemed very dated and illogical like Joan Plowright's character singing a "negro spritual" that she seemed to remember hearing sung on the Southern plantation when she was very young before being shipped off to England. Huh?

reply

I agee!

reply

It was funny as hell. I loved it.

"Did I smell Negro?"

reply

I believe that you mean
"I thought I heard Negro!"
"Nope! No Negro spoken here!"

I think it was a hilarious movie in which we can laugh at ourselves. The only thing I didn't like was how racist they made the white upper class. Please. No matter what city, if your downtown ghetto is anything like the one in this movie, you're not going to see 90% of the white people in the city reject black people.
Or I could be wrong. I do live in Memphis, and I don't like know anyone like the "white people" in BDTH.
Despite this argument I have with the movie, I've seen it about 3 times, actually I rented it one night and the next day I watched it on a charter bus on a trip to an away game, and it didn't bother me one bit.

reply

Yeah, it was pretty disappointing. Several reviews back when it first came out were positive, which tempted me to buy it without watching it first. Yuck...

Hahaha. That's hilarious.

No, sorry, "dude." It wasn't good.

reply

I laughed at quite a bit of the lines at the beginning of this movie. However, I really felt it was insulting to African Americans and the ending was just plain stupid. I wondered what Latifah was thinking when she agreed to do this.

I'd love to see her another role like the one she had in Living Out Loud. That was suited to her talent.

reply

I agree! This movie was <yawn> such a bore! I could have put my children to sleep to this! And very insulting for African Americans! What was the Queen thinking!!!

reply

You people are really weird. What the hell is funny for you if you didn't laugh at this movie. This movie is not the best of all but is far away from being a bad movie. Get real!

reply

This movie isn't the best comedy in the world but I don't think it is the worst ever.. It was mildly entertaining and in my opinion is 100x better than Kung Pow, that movie was absolute crap. I am a huge fan of Steve Martin but this certainly was no where near his best...

reply

I agree, it was horrible!

The only recent "comedy" that I can think of that was worse was "Say It Isn't So".

reply

It prentended to be a satire of upper class racism but it really expressed upper class racism. Take the scene where Latifa arrived at Steve Martin's office. She is not dressed poorly, in fact, she is dressed quite nicely. Yet when the boss comes around the corner Steve Martin TRIES TO HIDE HER. HE DID NOT KNOW SHE WAS AN ESAPED EX-CON YET SO WHY TRY TO HIDE HER!?!

---A really sickening film that shows the level of trash audiences will accept these days.
