I know the 3 Reasons the show never made it through 1 season!

Honestly, i'm still like the biggest fan of this show, as well as all the carsey-werner sitcoms, but i think i found out why this 1 didn't work:

1. Air-time: The show began it's run in January instead of recieving a bunch of promotion in September and airing in October.

2. Bad planning: Fox/Carsey-Werner should've realized that THAT 70's SHOW was already doing well, and that a spin-off(or anything like it) would jepordize the show's creditability, leaving people to choose which 1 they liked better. (Although you'd think people would wanna see both...)

3. Fox as a company: Quite possibly the reason the show was pulled sooo abrubtly was that FOX destroys all their good/decent sitcoms before they even breakout into a successful series and instead pushes out crappy new ones like THE WAR AT HOME... WOW...

I think there was some back stage politics between the producers and someone at Fox at the time. Just a couple of things: That 80's Show had better early ratings than That 70's Show did AND it did it without an established lead in. It was up against established shows kicking off a night at 8PM on Wednesday nights and proceeded to be moved around week after week and fans of The Family Guy (me included) can tell you how that works out for the best of shows. When people can't find you, they can't watch you, no matter how much you like the show. If I remember correctly, That 70's Show started out on Fox Sundays with Simpson's viewers built in for it's early exposure. I think it premiered after a Super Bowl to boot (I think). I dug That 70's Show, but I loved That 80's Show. Back stage politics have killed other shows in the past. One of the top syndicated shows of all-time was cancelled that way. Gilligan's Island was rolling along, while Gunsmoke was on it's last legs without a time slot. Turns out that the network president's wife loved Gunsmoke and wanted it on for another season. Gilligan's Island was axed just like that, having nothing to do with a sound programming decision. I would venture to guess that Gilligan's syndication money has absolutely dwarfed Gunsmoke's. Bet ya Gunsmoke cost loads more to produce too.

It had better ratings than That '70s Show? I'm not surprised. I am also a fan of That '70s Show, but That '80s Show blew it away.

I'm not surprised That 80's Show had better early ratings than That 70's Show. It was a spin-off, after all. It might not have had an established lead, but come on, you knew 70's Show fans were going to check out because they'd hope it would be as good.

That 70's Show did start out on Sundays after The Simpsons, but it premiered in August 1998, so definitely not after a Super Bowl. That's Family Guy you're thinking of, which premiered its pilot after the Super Bowl one year, and then started its first season run a month or two after that.

So if this show did was better then that 70's show why did they cancel it.

I love the oc and one tree hill.. now what!!!!!!!!!!

didn't live up 2 "expectations"...

I thought this show was horrible. The only jokes they attempted to make all had to do with something being "80's." It just got really old really fast.

i'd like 2 believe you, but if you watch episodes like Katie's Birthday or My DeAD Friend, u'll see that there's jokes about life, not just the 80's...

It's just a theme incorporated into the show.

That '80s Show is still better than most of the crap they have on TV these days. Give us an official DVD release!!!

Why do people keep saying that That 80's Show was all about 80's gadgets and things to do with 80's? It was a show about living in the 80's and didn't throw gadgets at you at every turn. It was very funny. I wish they had used a different title so people would quit comapring it to That 70's Show.

First I think The War at Home is an awesome show. Second, I think the reason this show fell is because That 70's show was about a bunch of teenagers while this one was about a bunch of 20+ year old characters. Oh and also they didn't have the circle (or a variation of it).

That was some what of the 80's I was in highschool in the 80's they didnt even say the slangs that I and everyone used, say for instance, We said back in the days where choice, gnarly, tubular, stellar, rightoues, tripindickular, trapadous, Right on, radical, grodie, farout, groovy, up your nose with a rubber hose, eat s h i t and die, eat it. hit the bricks, get the hell out of dodge. etc. where the hell where the acid wash, instead of 20 yearold 80's why not make them in highschool with the slangs I just said, would have been better. Back when I was in highschool, we wore storm riders, mac jacket, and datens. I and concert patches, with long hair being a head. I'm still stuck in the 80's always will be, hate this generation, hate this rap crap, all these kids act black when there white as you.

I do agree with all of those but you also have to remember how nostalgic people were for the 70s at that time. Why?? I'll never understand...I have and always will dislike 70s pop culture, especially the music. The late 90s, early 00s was like the "let's bash the 80s" era and talk about how awesome the 70s were. We were so busy doing that, that we kind of forgot that the 80s weren't actually that bad at all. The first episode plays a song from The Smiths! How bad can a show be if they actually play a song from The Smiths?

And the jokes were funnier than that 70s show imo. I never thought that show was funny, all of the characters were super annoying. I always felt like that show tried to hard and always threw the "70s" gimmick it ran on in our faces. Not to mention...what was the point of it even taking place in the 70s? They could have made that show in the late 90s, it was just a period piece for period's sake. People forget how awful the last couple of seasons were too, remember the actor who played Eric left for awhile.

Another reason for this show not lasting more than a season is that, you also had the fact that reality tv shows were replacing every single sitcom and drama at the time. I used to love a show called Nero Wolf which was replaced by fcking Dog the Bounty Hunter...

It was a sad and dark era for television.

Anyone remember Freaks and Geeks? How about Undeclared? Those two shows were funny, well written, and poignant but they didn't last more than a season either. So you can't blame "unfunny jokes" and poorly written characters for That 80s show's demise. I mean we were glued into Survivor at the time...
