this should be on the top 250
shareIf its been around since 2003 and I've never heard of it, I am compelled to disagree.

maybe you should see it before you make that statment
shareWhat, you mean dead-canaanite hasn't heard of it? then sure it can't possibly be anywhere near the top 250!!!
(by the way, some people place too much relevance on the top 250. Who cares about other people's ratings anyway?)
Ironically, this isn't even ironic at all.
If its been around since 2003 and I've never heard of it, I am compelled to disagree.Megalomaniac.
Buono, il brutto, il cattivo., Il.
Number 4 on the top 250.
Came out in 1966.
I've never heard of this movie.
So it doesn't belong there.
In case you can't see through my iron curtain of sarcasm, my point it this: just because you've don't know about it, doesn't mean it's not a good movie.
If you haven't heard of the good, the bad, and the ugly, then you shouldn't be involved in the discussion of any movie's merit.

you've never heard of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? I find that hard to believe.
I think what the poster was saying was that most, if not all, of the top 250 are extremely well known and highly rated films that most people have heard of. If a movie is from 2003 and it is in the top 250 it would probably be more well known than American Splendor.
Really? Just because you haven't heard of it means it shouldn't be on a list for great movies? That is disgusting. It would belong there if it were on.
shareIf its been around since 2003 and I've never heard of it, I am compelled to disagree.
'American Splendor' is a pretty good film and all, but it's nowhere near the top 250 films of all time. I can think of about 25 Kurosawa films that are much better and that's just one director, never mind the whole pantheon of film.
shareI agree it's a lot better than many movies in the top 250.
shareIts in my top 20 of all time.
share^^ Ya same here. Definitely one of my favorites. But the top 250 list is ridiculous anyways, not in the slightest a measure of cinematic greatness. This is one of those rare films that unfortunately just doesn't have the public exposure of Lord of the Rings for example.
"I'm constitutionally incapable of making eye-contact with a woman I don't know"
ok everyone, i was stupid to make the statement that I made! its not fair of me to judge a film that I haven't even seen. I'll rent it then decide!

I agree!
shareIf I can recall....it was on the Top 250 years ago .
Great movie though ( 8/10 )
I agree. Let's be honest, it deserves it. Innovative, great writing, amazing direction, and incredible acting. American Splendor is one of the most memorable films of the past ten years, one of the best films of the past ten years, and, one of my personal, all-time favourites. Therefore, I say, definitely top 250.
shareI agree with you one hundered percent Tomata, even though I've never seen "American Splendor". Your writing style makes me beleive that I would follow you to the ends of the earth.
shareIf this film didn't have such sharp writing, excellent direction and awesome soundtrack, Giamatti's amazing performance is strong enough to carry this film to the Top 250. Everything considered, this film deserves Top 50 imho.
shareThough the film may be wonderful in many respects, the DVD was being more-or-less given away here for the lowest price I've ever seen for a contemporary film. This is a measure of its perception in some quarters. A main reason why it comes to attention is because Paul Giamatti plays the lead, although recently, between "Cinderella Man" and "John Adams", he's been having trouble in getting downloaded. Not that that is unusual.
shareWatching it now on IFC and it is pretty damn good. And I'm normally not into these types.
shareThere's tons of bad movies in the top 250 list, it's an okay guide but not the de facto list of the 250 best movies of ever.
share
Well, just in my humble opinion, American Splendor is a much better movie than 'The Dark Knight' which as a write this is currently number 8 on the list.
Can't you read? It says SPOILERS!
It should be, but in my opinion a list that places WALL-E on 44th place is not a reference.

It's a very good movie, 8/10. It belongs in the Top 5000, but it'd be a stretch to consider it as belonging in the Top 1000, let alone the Top 250. Glad you like it though, and I hope you find out about a lot of great movies, from all over the world and since cinema started in 1895--there's a lot of masterpieces out there. The treasure is in discovering them.
