Julia's hair

Doesn't her hair look out of place against the other girls'? For the 50's style, I mean?

The film is set in the early 1950s. A carry-over from the 1940s wouldn't be unusual.

I noticed that as well, and I assumed it was an attempt to illustrate her character's less traditional outlook and style -- by giving her a less conventional, less structured, less coiffed hairstyle. She was pretty liberal and from California, so, in contrast to these conservative, ultra-coiffed New Englanders, her character is a little more hippie-dippy than everyone else.

I think she was supposed to represent a more beatnik-type person, more relaxed, counter-culture, etc. A definite contrast to the more traditional 50's style woman that Nancy, Betty's mother, and even the other girls had.
