The Italian Professor

I like the movie in general but I certainly believe it could do without the italian prof. What a futile character!!
Every single scene of his annoyed me...
I don't have anything against the actor, he was fine but the character! aghhhhh!

Especially him telling Ms. Watson that he lied because she was too perfect was just too much! You've been telling the same lie for how many years, dude?

I think the other way around about their break up. Katherine really overreacted when she found out about the Army lie. It's not something get destroyed over or break up for. If it was me, I'd laugh my butt off and give playful punches.

Oh no Mufasa. Perhaps *you* shouldn't turn your back on me.

I liked the guy. And I thought Katherine liked him too and was happy with him so I was surprised by the way she broke up with him over such a minor issue. Yes, he lied to her but it was nothing too serious or important to get upset for. I wouldn't even care about such details, so I don't understand why she got so annoyed with him.

You think it's a small lie? He's been telling the lie to everyone for as long as he's been a teacher. He used the stories to abuse his authority over young women in his classroom. Of course, I think Katherine should have been more apalled by the fact that he had affairs with his students. That really should have been a red flag that his character was a weasel. And the lie was something he had told her since they first met each other. I mean, when you find out a man you've been friends and are now intimate with has been lying to you, you don't say, "Hey! Who cares?" Especially since he didn't confess it to her. She may never have found out if it wasn't for his big-mouthed friend.

The fact that you would allow a man to lie to you repeatedly and "laugh over it" shows that you have a lack of self-respect. Katherine Watson was better than that. Honesty is not too much to expect in a relationship.

If he lied about one thing, then what else has he lied about? I agree that the fact that he was sleeping with the students would be a turn-off. In Katherine's case, she wasn't looking for a long term relationship. She was also looking for a way out of her relationship with Paul.

She did tell Bill that as long as they were having an affair that for him to sleep with any students would be unacceptable. For Katherine, the lying was unacceptable also. In addition, the content of the lie itself made her think that Bill was someone other than he truly was. She thought that she was getting to know him, but he really wasn't.

I didn't understand their problem with his lie. Come on, who believes war stories?

reply

That's a huge lie. I don't blame her for breaking up with him over that. If he was really being honest with her, the first time she mentioned Italy to him he should have said, "Actually there's a funny story behind that..." and explained the truth, not trying to play it off like he'd been to Italy. Did he really think she'd never find out?

"he had affairs with his students"

Really not that big a deal. I've known many Young professors that had affairs, and sometimes married students. After all the age gap is (for example) 21 to 26..... not that huge. TODAY it is discouraged but back in the 1950s the women were expected to find any eligible bachelor, including their own prof.

Lying about serving in war zone is not a trivial matter.
It is beneath contempt.

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

I agree with jellyree. It's like stolen valor, without the uniform.

So you have no problem with someone telling a major lie? Wouldn't you wonder what other lies they have and will tell?

How could you trust him?

parlakmavi_silver,

I have to agree with you. I felt that he was not needed in the movie. I didn't understand at all the importance of his character in it either. Perhaps someone could shed some light on how he was relevant to the storyline. I hated every scene where he appeared in.

Bill is there as a romantic device, and also to underscore who Katherine really is.
She is attracted to him: he's been to Europe, fought in the war, speaks Italian and is also the ultimate bad boy. At first it appears that Katharine and Bill are alike, both free sprits - they bend and even break the rules, they're not living their lives by "shoulds". She becomes his lover without looking for commitment at first, a real no-no for the time; and then partially because of their involvement can't commit to Paul when he proposes - she even calls him "Bill" by mistake.
But for all that Katherine doesn't conform, she has integrity, she's not false, she doesn't lie or cheat. And Bill does. That's why she breaks with him - his life is essentially a lie.

i know right?? I mean, no offense...but I didn't really like his face. He looks a bit, er, nevermind. They should have chosen a guy with a nice younger face! Hahaha, okay so I'm being biased. But I thought him lying to Katherine was low and un professor-ish. We watched in in class a while ago, and we were all "omg, euw...they just did the nasty!" haha. Okay, random. But what's-his-name was a really interesting character. :>

I wouldn't have hooked up, with him at all. With a student! Was she crazy? I guess there was some weakening there.

Always a joy to see McNulty pop up in a film! He plays cads so well. He plays a gay character really well in Pride too.
