That's because Betty was jealous of everyone. Including Connie, who not only was 'different' (don't forget, the '50s did not have lots of heavy-ish people, and conformity was EVERYTHING) but had the true love & admiration that she herself wanted.
Betty worked so hard to portray a certain image, a front.
It was all illusion, and she knew it deep down. She was desperate to keep up the facade, so she lashed out nastily at everyone who was not only doing what they truly wanted to do, but GETTING what they truly wanted.
Betty was rich yes, but her parents cared little about her wants. Her fiance cared even less.
As we see, she finally realizes SHE must make the changes needed.

If we're strictly talking looks, in my opinion Connie wasn't cute at all.
Betty's personality sucked, though.
This. It's like when Connie confronts Betty about Charlie and asks her why she couldn't just let Connie be happy. BETTY'S not happy, and she just couldn't bear it that Connie was.
And don't forget it was Betty who introduced Charlie and Connie, and at the time she figured she was doing them both a favor. She never counted on it turning into something more. Connie was "imperfect" and single and definitely not Miss America material, and she was growing happy with the man who was only supposed to be a courtesy date. While Betty, who did everything right and was wealthy and perfect and married, had the man who had promised to love her forever but left her every weekend for his mistress.
Yes, exactly.
And to Betty's knowledge it was a safe option. Because she knew Charlie was getting serious with Deb (as far as she knew). She never suspected that Charlie may have been already wanting to break up with Deb and Connie was the exact girl he was looking for. And the fact that Connie may have been the reason Charlie left Deb was something that made Betty jealous. Because her husband didn't leave his amour for her.
