Has a domestic remake ever happened in this short length of time?

I mean, Cabin Fever isn't fifteen years old yet. Obviously many films get remade in different countries in short time spans (within a year or two), but I can't recall an American film being remade in its home country in such a relatively short amount of time. The fact that this film is getting a remake is extremely bizarre to me.

I know the last Exorcist movie (The one where Stellan Skarsguard takes on Max Von Sydow's role) was remade within months of it's release because it didn't do very well.

Though to be fair, that was less a remake and more a rearrangement of the first movie's footage to the extent that it apparently makes the story completely different.

I wouldn't know for sure, though. I never saw the re-release.

There's numerous examples in cinema's early days. One example is the 1914 version of Cecil B. Demille's Squaw Man, which was the first film directed by Demille. He would later direct a remake in 1918 (now a lost film), and a talkie version in 1931, making him the first director to ever film three versions of the same movie.

The migration from silent films to talkies saw a number of other Hollywood films remade as talkies within a short time span. For example, Tod Browning's silent The Unholy Three was released in 1925 followed by a talkie remake in 1930.

The Phantom of the Opera is another example of a film remade within 5 years of its release, with a sound version released in 1929 when the original came out in 1925. You're correct that it's nothing new.

That's comparing apples to oranges.

Funny Games was remade by the same director 10 years after it first came out.

Funny Games wasn't American.
