Dark Matter trying so hard to be the next Firefly...fail

Dark Matter (2015)
The writers seem to have taken the basic framework for Firefly then twisted it to be as politically correct as possible. The result is milquetoast scifi. 

I'm still watching it but it just leaves me wanting to rewatch Firefly again.

I agree. It's not a terrible show. A couple of the actors are pretty bad though. They really kill some of the scenes and overall atmosphere of the show. It has potential though. It's funny you mentioned rewatching Firefly. That's what I'm doing right now as a result of the last DM episode. Lol

PC? The only thing more PC about Dark Matter than Firefly is having an asian character, which actually was a bit of a story omission of Firefly (given the whole USA/China backstory of the 'verse).

Dark Matter actually probably loses PC points for the asian character being an inscrutable katana wielder.

Politicially correct ? The heck ?

First of all, what isnt politically correct about Firefly in the first place ?

Second, I would say the closest to Dark Matter is the Alien universe. Its the same big cooperation which de facto operate above the law.

There is also no cowboy theme whatsoever.

Also the Rasa crew are big time criminals, while the Firefly crew are small time criminals.

Other than both shows mostly playing on a space ship they are really not that similar. It's like saying that Firefly copied Doctor Who, because they are travelling through space to different planets.

reply

Really? I think there is a lot in common between the two shows.

Crews live and travel around on a space ship pulling crimes to make a living.
Character has been modified to have extraordinary capabilities. (Two/River)
Character that really likes guns and being a mercenary. (Three/Jayne)
Character has a mysterious past. (All/River, Book)
Oppressive intergalactic police/military force. (GA/Alliance)
Mysterious organization after them. (Seers/Hands of Blue)
Both have a ships doctor. (At least, for awhile.)
Super-smart character. (Five/Kaylee)
Very strong leader character. (Two/Mal)

Dark Matter adds a whole lot more too, with the Android, the evil corporations, the various factions out to get the crew.

I like Serenity better than the Raza, though. Firefly made the ship like another character, where the Raza is just a vessel in Dark Matter.

I like both shows a lot; hard to say which one I like better. I just hope DM continues for awhile, and closes out in a satisfying manner.

By that notion Firefly was just trying to be like Farscape but failed.

Dark Matter may not be better written or acted than Firefly but I find it more entertaining. It also explores a lot of really cool sci-fi concepts. Firefly was a drama with a sci-fi backdrop, not a sci-fi show.

That rug really tied the room together.

Basically, I am still watching Dark Matter because I can't find anything else, and it does have its moments. Not many, but they are there.

As far as ANYONE that compares this to Firefly, umm, sorry. Other than ripping off a few of the setups and characters, as they have from so many other shows, Dark Matter does not deserve to be even mentioned in the same sentence.

Sigh, still, I will keep watching and try to have a more positive post next time. I am hoping for good stuff next season. Acting, directing, and producing. Its a good concept, and there really are some good storylines, yet it falls short in so many ways.
