How does this have so high score?

I mean for a sci-fi it's pretty weak, the dialogue between characters is very weak, and Nathan Fillion doesn't have this believable Captain aura. He makes a more believable social sciences teacher.

The thing is that it isn't a SF. It's a western set in space.

nothing is purely SF , SF can only be the setting. A story still has to be a horror / thriller / comedy / whodunit / romance or whatever. (same for 'western' i guess - just the setting) I learnt that on the imdb sci-fi board where every thread that wasnt "list your faves" was "Is sci fi?"
(I got quite involved in the Mad Max one, which imho isnt sci fi)

Hey LiquidLicker! come back! did you finish the series? did you watch Serenity?

reply

Of course some things are pure SF. The film Primer comes to mind. Just because it's in space and/or a spaceship doesn't make it SF. Firefly is a western show that just happens to be set in the future, in space.

reply

ok *some* things are pure SF . very very few . Even big bad "Interstellar" with all it hard sci fi creds was a love story wasnt it? (although i suppose you could ditch the love angle and still have a film, albeit even more boring)

Primer was a thriller about greed, secrecy, scheming and betrayal between two friends :p
It could equally have been set in an insider trading stocks office. just kidding .

I suppose there are scifi films where the story could be done in any setting, and scifi films where the scifi is a required element, but those films will have other genres mixed in for flavouring
