What film, if any, is being referenced during the scene when Vince Vaughn's character is smoking a cigarette while performing on the rings?

I don't think its any film. Just something funny, like smoking a cigarette was giving him the strength to pull himself up on the rings.

You are probably thinking about GREASE when Danny is trying out for different sports. I think it's in the gym when the coach tells him to cut back smoking.
