Nothing was accomplished? The main character fell in love and conquered a wave that made her famous.
Rodriguez's character calls her a coward and pushes her because she knows she can do better than what she's giving and when she sees that she gets hurt in the contest, she becomes a little scared and it does not really matter to her anymore. Even if she knew she could could win it, she loves her, and would stand by either of her decisions.
If the "tell me what to do" speech is the one I'm thinking about between the main character and her love affair, it could have been delivered much better, I agree, but it was believable enough, in my opinion. Not a strong or great scene, but it worked well for the fun atmosphere of the movie.
"Why would anyone steal a doorknob?"
"There are some nice doorknobs."
