i've been quite irked by what they're doing to 2d animation. as someone pointed out, it's like they're not even trying. so i was wondering - do you think disney would do better if they quit these effing animal cartoons (brother bear, home on the range) & return to the princess ones (snow white, cinderella, sleeping beauty, the little mermaid, beauty & the beast, aladdin)? i'm way biased as those are my favorites but i was just wondering if a princess-cartoon would do better. and cutting out the too mature jokes (hercules / anastasia - that's not disney but it couldn't decide if it wanted to be mature or immature - and it's a princess-cartoon), the action adventure (tarzan) & adultish theme (pocahontas / the hunchback of notre dame) & the songs sang by people like michael bolton / phil collins?
Wow! I hadn't thought of that. They have been doing a lot of animal ones lately...I would be really interested to see another Princess one. I love Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty, and so on...
During the dark age of the 70s and 80s (Disney's death) All of the animated features released after Walt's death until The Little Mermaid in 1989 were animal films. The heroes were either animals or animals dressed to be human. (The Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Rescuers, Winnie the Pooh, Great Mouse Detective, Fox and the Hound, Oliver and Company) Of course the only exception was The Black Cauldron in 1985 but no one would be able to acknowledge that as a Disney films sinced it did so poorly
Another funny thing is that Don Bluth who was Disney's #1 competition did the same thing during the same period! (American Tail, Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Secret of Nimb) Man...animators just love mice movies...I wonder why...
Anyway I don't it's the princess thing that makes Disney money. (I shudder thinking about the over-marketing/branding of Disney Princesses) The problem overall is story. This began with The Emperor's New Groove in 2000, the first of many original story films to come. TENG was actually a completely different film named Kingdom of the Sun that was drastically changed from a serious Prince and the Pauper film to an original comedy in a few years time (The only things that were kept were the South American setting and a villianess named Yzma)
This was the beginning of original story films (except Treasure Planet). A year later Atlantis became the most completely off-Disney animated film ever made. Never before has Disney gone as far as to make an action animated film in the likeliness of Titan A.E. (that was a Don Bluth film...makes you think competition hasnt died out yet) Treasure Planet was just a copy off of the same thing and in the middle was Lilo and Stitch only this film despite having aliens had more of the likliness of Disney and the cuteness of a classic Disney film as well.
There are not many fairy tales left to transform into animated features seeing that Disney had taken and done all the good ones. that could be another problem.
In closing, animal films are not the problem. The problem lies in Disney's failure to tell a good story from beginning to end. Remember Dumbo, Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmations, The Jungle Book
And three more words to sum it all up: THE LION KING
thank you ****** Late night jengajam! Social graces! Late night jengajam! Settin' up shop!
I think Disney needs to do some homework and find some good obscure fairy tales or old children's books to adapt. Concerning fairy tales - how about some ethnic ones? Maybe an Indian or African one to shake things up a bit. Honestly, I used to measure my years in the Disney animated films. I know exactly how old I was and in what grade when all the classic 90s films came out. But after Atlantis, I've only seen two in the theater I think. So sad...
What is the use of wizardry if it cannot save a unicorn?
Today IMDb announced it will remove its message boards on February 20th. So, I wanted to leave a final post in the earliest post I have linked to my profile. Unfortunately, it's this one complaining about a dying Disney animation era 13 years ago. Lol. (I was right anyway. It's called "Frozen". And now all Disney does is push their princesses.)
This is absolutely the wrong decision for IMDb to have made. And so was Disney killing off its 2D animation. Just another loss.
My original account was from 1999 so the badge there says IMDb member: 17 years. I never imagined IMDb would sabotage itself in the end.
But I loved this site, it was part of my life (clearly, 17 years!) and it was a good thing.
