Logic behind drawing straws scene?

So they draw the straws and then the black guy is like, "Yup, I drew the shortest straw" and then the other guy is like "Hey let me see that! Hey you cheated! You curved the end, making it appear shorter" And the black guy is "Because this is my ship, I want to go", and the other guy is "Nah ah, we're drawing the straws again, you make us look bad (wtf?)"

I don't understand what would the black guy do if somebody else drew his bent straw? Or did he bend his straw after the two other guys drew? What was his game plan for drawing straws? Also, if he wanted to go, why not just volunteer without drawing straws?

The straws were all the same length and prepared by him. He bent it to make it look like had been randomly and fairly selected.

He wanted to sacrifice himself and if he volunteered there could have been an unnecessary fight over who had to go.
