When Swank's character is told, "It's over" because her crew crashed a shuttle, her shoulder rank insignia is clearly silver (Lt Colonel) which later changes to gold (Major).

She probably was demoted.

Wouldn't think so considering the praise that the council gave to her for landing safely. Be pretty surprising to demote her after that

Swank was repeatedly and consistently referred to as "Major" throughout the movie.

That her golden Major's shoulder grade insignia looked silver in the hallway and stairwell of that scene is not uncommon. In certain lighting conditions, metallic Maj insignia DOES look the same as Lt Col insignia. The more highly polished it is, the greater the similarity in their appearance. They're really hard to distinguish sometimes.
