A poor man's Armaggedon.

Seriously.
- The sudden catastrophe.
- A thrown together plan with a thrown together group.
- Drawing straws to see who would sacrifice themselves.
- Their original plan ends up unsuccessful.
- The military threat of an "option B".
- Someone buying them time by delaying the "option B".
- In the end, through adversity, they are successful.

TA DA ! Armageddon 2.

To be honest this is 2001: A Space Odyssey compared to that Michael Bay garbage. A asteroid the size of Texas is only discovered a mere 18 DAYS before its due to hit Earth and the only people who can save the world are a bunch of idiots with no astronaut training.

Yeah "The Core" is Best Picture compared to that crap.

The entire story of The Core is a complete ripoff of Armageddon. If you think Armageddon was crap then so is The Core. In fact, Armageddon came out 5 years earlier so The Core is as unoriginal as it gets. When I watched it I had a headache by the end because of rolling my eyes every time a situation reminded me of Armageddon (which was throughout its runtime).

But at least it disregarded the lame romance and didn't have the Affleck Effect where the audience automatically feels 50 IQ points lower once he appears on screen.

Yes, it was a standard Bay-Formula film. And the science was pretty much all fantasy-based. No argument there.
